Surprised Kedrick James is at the bottom of that depth chart. From all indications, that dude showed out through camp. I guess it is a good thing to have that kind of depth.

If a new(er) guy shows out and turns heads all attention is placed on him and the rest of the group are seemingly ignored. I'm pretty sure of myself when suggesting there's a number of guys who are lower in the chart but are going to be names we'll discuss this season.

Seriously, in a sense he reminds me of Waddle's story. We've talked a few times about him getting a look at returning kicks but since he's not listed I've seen more than a handful comment "well, that's not happening." But, we've got more than a few on staff who says he's going to get a look there--likely in game one.

In the end, other than fuel for conversations, what does the depth chart tell us? For me, I enjoy the "and/or" day only in its relation to when the season starts. On a few occasions it has informed us of guys no longer on the roster.

My very mild surprise for the first game will be Surtain. It's obvious that Saban can't hide this talent for long and with Louisville in Orlando why would you? That it will probably be at Savion Smith expense and not Diggs would be a little more surprising to me.

Surtain is going to be so good that sentiment will not keep anyone employed. Patrick gets on the field, somewhere, soon. The comparisons we are hearing to Fitzpatrick is pretty much the whole story.

Surtain is going to be good, but he's going through growing pains like every other Freshman, so I wouldn't think he is just going to take over for Diggs out of the gate. May be a matter of time, but I happen to think Diggs and Savion will man the corners for most if not all of the season to start the game.

This is pure second hand information, but I am hearing he just isn't grasping, not putting in the work, and only cares about using his name to get girls on campus. Once again, not my opinion, just something I heard from a buddy that has some connections in town.

If the comparison is being made due to both playing the same number of positions in the secondary--corner and safety--the comparison to Eddie is spot on. He, and Fitz, were able to do that.

Now we're bring how they were ranked in high school into play? If so now we're back to a comment earlier in this thread--it's a comparison that's premature. And this sentence--"has often been compared to Minkah Fitzpatrick in terms of ability to play anywhere in the secondary"--has nothing to do with how a kid was ranked.

All that said, I've yet to see someone actually compare the two other than the quick blurb here I've quoted. "Often been compared?" Please. That's just not true unless these comparison were being made between a couple of people chatting during the viewing periods. I've not seen them.

It's certainly arguable this "elite status" as you're asserting came with Surtain partially, if not largely, due to his name. In a sense, no different than Ben Davis.
