Official Depth Chart / Roster released

Surprised Kedrick James is at the bottom of that depth chart. From all indications, that dude showed out through camp. I guess it is a good thing to have that kind of depth.
'dems da rulz. :naughtydevil:

If a new(er) guy shows out and turns heads all attention is placed on him and the rest of the group are seemingly ignored. I'm pretty sure of myself when suggesting there's a number of guys who are lower in the chart but are going to be names we'll discuss this season.

Seriously, in a sense he reminds me of Waddle's story. We've talked a few times about him getting a look at returning kicks but since he's not listed I've seen more than a handful comment "well, that's not happening." But, we've got more than a few on staff who says he's going to get a look there--likely in game one.

In the end, other than fuel for conversations, what does the depth chart tell us? For me, I enjoy the "and/or" day only in its relation to when the season starts. On a few occasions it has informed us of guys no longer on the roster.

It's a lot easier to play hide and seek with a true freshman and coach Saban is all about the deception. Doesn't really matter beyond someone's natural curiosity to start the season anyway. That Jalen is here is the only mini miracle for me as we wait out the first kickoff.

There are always personnel surprises that catch you off guard early. Like when Perschbacher played center right up until he didn't and they put Bozeman in for the next 2 years. My very mild surprise for the first game will be Surtain. It's obvious that Saban can't hide this talent for long and with Louisville in Orlando why would you? That it will probably be at Savion Smith expense and not Diggs would be a little more surprising to me.

A lot of folks harbor negative feelings towards Diggs, but I feel he has performed very well for us considering they brought him to offense and then back to defense. His first two years were complete opposite from a learning prospective. He got beat out last season, but I still think he has a lot of talent and ability to contribute as a first team guy this year.

Surtain is going to be so good that sentiment will not keep anyone employed. Patrick gets on the field, somewhere, soon. The comparisons we are hearing to Fitzpatrick is pretty much the whole story.

Who is making comparisons to Fitz? The guy hasn't stepped foot on the field, yet, and anyone who is making those comparison isn't just a tad premature, they're way premature.

He's talented, yes. He is where he is on the depth chart due to his work off the field as much as on.

So what did you just say? We will see what we see? No kidding, and here's some more breaking news, it will all start Saturday night.

I haven't heard the Minkah comparisons. Shyheim Carter was the one getting those praises from what I recall. Surtain is going to be good, but he's going through growing pains like every other Freshman, so I wouldn't think he is just going to take over for Diggs out of the gate. May be a matter of time, but I happen to think Diggs and Savion will man the corners for most if not all of the season to start the game.

Anyone know the full story on Ben Davis? He was so highly hyped. Is it a doghouse thing, or is he just not grasping the defense?

This is pure second hand information, but I am hearing he just isn't grasping, not putting in the work, and only cares about using his name to get girls on campus. Once again, not my opinion, just something I heard from a buddy that has some connections in town.

5 Newcomers to Watch for the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2018
The son of the former NFL All-Pro cornerback of the same name, Surtain was ranked No. 2 among high school cornerback prospects nationally. He has a prototypical frame for a corner, and the speed, athleticism and coverage skills for the position, but some analysts see him taking on a versatile role similar to the one Minkah Fitzpatrick played over the last three seasons. Either way, he’ll play early and often.

What about the freshmen?
The freshmen class is filled with talent. Reports from summer 7v7 workouts have said Patrick Surtain Jr. and Josh Jobe have been particularly impressive. Surtain Jr. has often been compared to Minkah Fitzpatrick in terms of ability to play anywhere in the secondary. Football savvy insiders expect Patrick to earn a starting role sometime in 2018. Jobe, initially believed to become a safety, is now expected to get a chance at cornerback.

Frankly, I've heard the comparison numerous times throughout summer and fall camp.

Yeah, I don't visit any if those sites. Like I said, I always saw where folks said Carter was the Minkah replacement. I have zero doubts Surtain will be good.

"has often been compared to Minkah Fitzpatrick in terms of ability to play anywhere in the secondary."

So, basically the comparison is based on him being able to play safety, corner, or Star. The same comparison could be made with Eddie Jackson in those terms--Fitz gets the nod because he's the 'freshest' name on most fans' minds.

Based purely on what I've learned the biggest thing that has impressed me about Surtain is how much time he's spending in the film room. He's putting in the work there which will/has elevated his spot on the depth chart.

Except Eddie wasn't a 5* elite recruit coming to the Capstone. Minkah came to Alabama elite. Not sure how comparing Surtain to Eddie Jackson this early in his career would have the same pop.

If the comparison is being made due to both playing the same number of positions in the secondary--corner and safety--the comparison to Eddie is spot on. He, and Fitz, were able to do that.

Now we're bring how they were ranked in high school into play? If so now we're back to a comment earlier in this thread--it's a comparison that's premature. And this sentence--"has often been compared to Minkah Fitzpatrick in terms of ability to play anywhere in the secondary"--has nothing to do with how a kid was ranked.

All that said, I've yet to see someone actually compare the two other than the quick blurb here I've quoted. "Often been compared?" Please. That's just not true unless these comparison were being made between a couple of people chatting during the viewing periods. I've not seen them.

It's certainly arguable this "elite status" as you're asserting came with Surtain partially, if not largely, due to his name. In a sense, no different than Ben Davis.

On another note:

From College Football Live, 8/28.

Chris Conner:

"Tons of information coming in around college football on starting quarterbacks and we got absolutely nothing from Alabama."

"Nick Saban was, dare I say, recalcitrant towards the media on his quarterback predicament."

Dare I say? It bothers me when someone uses a word that isn't right but in the end it very well may be a Freudian slip.

Recalcitrant: an obstinately uncooperative attitude toward authority or discipline.

Hell, predicament is a stretch.
