šŸ€ Oats on the locker room post UGA: "I need to hear what you guys think the problem is."

just read this forum....
Knowing the problem...and correcting the problem are totally different beast...
Talk is cheap if no action. Oats is having to learn and grow in this as much as the players. I have always had a nagging feeling that he was a high school coach only a few years ago. Not saying he is not good just still has things to learn.

Their play looks like pickup bball game....

And a lot of "lacking of confidence" on some of players....to many turning down open shots... and others taking terrible looking shots.... pickup bball stuff..

Looks like we got the cart ahead of the horse on Bama BB. One great year and perhaps we thought Bama had turned the corner. I believe Nate is a good coach, but he has too many low IQ players on his roster this year. The one and done era is here for every coach and expect the roller coaster ride will show it year after year.

The difficult schedule at the start of the year sounded pretty good but perhaps it has contributed to the slump the team finds itself. Did this team peak in the 1st 1/3 of the season?

Well. Obviously it did. Why? Thats what he is paid
to figure!

But this team isnt losing to just top ranked teams. They are losing to bottom dwellers

Making uga look good was hard. And thats hard to do!

I watched and thought.... what are they doing? Certainly not playing as a team
Not hitting FTs. Turnover after turnover
Giving up the boards
All fixable!
Can they turn it around?

FWIW we're 7-5 vs Q1 + Q2 opponents. We still have five Q1 opponents left (that's insane).

Our issues are definitely playing down to our opponents. Our shooting slumps are a direct result of our play. Poor spacing + bad shot selection will always lead to a low shooting percentage. Then you account for that outside of maybe Keon and Miles, we don't have one reliable guard that can get blow bys and finish at the rim consistently. Love Shack, but his carelessness with the basketball when he's trying to improvise is costing the team. He's a below average ball handler with poor decision making. But he doesn't care because he believes he can play in the NBA (he won't). JD is also hurting us because he's shown to not be a reliable ball handler yet and makes errant passes. I think it would be smart to slide him to SG and not let him be the primary PG to lead the offense.

Defensively, guys just aren't buying in. They'll have stretches where they play with high energy, but allow a few runs by the opposing team to affect them mentally throughout the game. They played tight D vs Mizzou and UGA early on, but both were making tough shots. As a result, the team slacked off and just allowed the momentum to put them in a bigger hole. You can't play like that. You have to play with the same intensity and urgency for 40 minutes. This is where leadership is key. Losing Bruner, Petty, Reese, and Herb is where this comes into play. The talent level is great right now, but it's all for nothing if guys don't step up and be vocal leaders. Finally, JD, Shack, and JQ are not good on ball defenders and consistently get beat off the dribble. This puts Bediako, Gary, Rojas, and Gurley in a tough spot because they're having to come up and help, then immediately crash down to guard inside.

I'm on the boat of just make the tournament now. Get enough wins to get in and refocus in the offseason. We'll have a few transfers (Tchikou, Keon Ambrose) and some that will declare for the draft (Quinerly, Shack, Ellis; possibly JD and Bediako). But we'll also add a top 5 class with better defenders and get back Nimari Burnett.

With Baylor coming in Saturday, this could get ugly. They've shown they are capable, but if they continue with the current status quo, they won't have the anatomy that is required to sit down.

I do believe we are playing down to lesser teams and playing to our ability against the good ones. We have not been blown out by a good team yet. We could easily get ran out of our gym by Baylor, but it wouldn't shock me if we kept it close either. We have got to learn how to be consistent and not play up or down based on who we are playing.

We aren't losing to good teams is the thing. We lost to #1 Auburn by four. Every other loss has been to a lesser opponent. That's what is sad. It's totally ass backwards. I'd be interested to see what the tournament committee has to say about it.

Pretty much my sentiments as well. Shackelford for sure as I expressed the same thoughts the other day. I think JD is a good ball handler, I just think he makes VERY poor passes and can't finish at the rim. He can penetrate and handle the point, but when the ball leaves his hand that's where he gets poor marks from me.

We don't have anyone at the moment that is pro material outside of Ellis. To me he's like Herbert Jones with his heart and motor. Teams can use that. The rest of them need to polish their skills, a lot. Quinerly was close, but something has happened to him and he's a shell of his best self.

can't finish at the rim.

Funny thing....seems none can finish at rim....

Fitting...vs uga.....wide open dunk at buzzer.... ( didnt mean anything I know)
Couldnt be executed...

But so many under basket...still missed...
I remember John Wooden made all his players use backboard ....when at rim......( of course couldnt dunk in those days)
Seems these days...they all want all net....

The crazy part is that if we played through Ellis more, then we'd be in great shape offensively. He needs the touches Shack gets IMO.

How many times after a loss have we hard CNO talk about (1) leadership and (2) 100% effort for 40 minutes? NEWS FLASH!!!!! That's coaching. Until he takes control of his BB program nothing is going to change. I guarantee anyone there are at least 3 others players sitting on the bench, that never get to play, that will give 100% effort just like Britton Johnson. They may not win a game but they will give 100% effort for 40 minutes. When you continue to let Q & S drive the lane and kick out for 3's and the 3's are not falling it might be a good idea to try something else. The talent is there....However the effort is not.

Until the D improves this team is going to struggle in my view. The up/down shooting and turnovers has been part of Oats teams and correlates to the style of offense. What has to be there every night for 40 minutes is the D. If the D was playing at an elite level then turnovers would occur resulting better offense.

At some point Oats as the coach has to look in the mirror and ask himself how is he contributing to the issues. I wonder if how he talks is conditional instead of don't look at the scoreboard or team but play to a standard. I am not in practice so really do not know but how consistent is his coaching and messaging when playing Gonzaga versus Georgia? Pure speculation but I suspect there is a difference. No way for me to know for sure but something has to explain how they played OOC versus in conference. Oats is a young coach and I think still learning. Getting humbled this year is probably teaching him some things as well.
