Just in case there's no misunderstanding teams can still use back-counters. There is a limit of five. I think it's of note how they can be used for early-enrollees.

(A note in case you're wondering. Teams can't use a scholarship slot if it was given to a player who doesn't qualify.)

It's certainly not out of the realm of possibility the Tide staff pulls from the JUCO ranks. I've not looked to see what those options are for the cycle of kids that'll graduate in a few weeks.

App State started spring camp a few days ago so if you're dying for other football news in a day or two ...

JUCO players were eligible for this signing class. I know they signed at least one in the early signing period. The majority of the top JUCO talent signed in the Fall or today.

Just so late in the game!!!

I guess we could get lucky on some kids that had marginal grades... And other schools passed on.

No doubt, but that's not the point with that comment about what we might see. I mention "they cycle of kids that'll graduate in a few weeks" because they're on a bit of a different time table with Bama. As you undoubtedly know there are restrictions in place for the SEC when it comes to JUCO (IE: eligibility left, graduation, etc.) I don't see it as being prudent to look at JUCO player who haven't graduated and put them to pen and paper. If you recall Orgeron lost a spot last season to an offer for a non-qualifier. (Who likely could have been signed under an academic redshirt and they'd have kept the spot.)

Academic redshirt? That's a new one for me. Each school has an admission requirement and the NCAA has an eligibility requirement. If you don't meet either of them, you're going to JUCO or prep school.

JUCO players know if they're on schedule to graduate in May or by August (just as most high school athletes know if they'll have issues graduating or qualifying). JUCOs can still sign now.

If some stop-gap measures are in order then I guess we should look under every stone. The Kid from Clemson on the DL is a good place to start with the unexpected number of DL coming back. QB, probably the same formula.

Potential Transfers

Clemson actually has 2 guys that are transferring out. One that has a year and the other has 2 years of eligibility left. Both fairly highly ranked coming out of HS.

Are they grad transfers, or will they have to sit a year for eligibility?

*EDIT* see where Johnson is a grad transfer with 2 years eligibility.......doesn't say if Robinson is.

Sterling would be an awesome pick up for us.

There is a thread on page two that's titled something about shirt colors that has a link that explains it further. The easiest way to understand it is to compare it to prop 48. it was only added to the NCAA bylaws in the last 2 or 3 years

This is also true... But we see Juco players committing in late spring, early summer often. if you've got a defensive tackle on the board that's got four years of eligibility you are offering him a lot quicker than you are a guy with only two or three.

we are probably looking at June before the last commitment from their ranks.

Both are grad transfers but Robinson only has one year of eligibly left. I think Johnson could be an impact player, Robinson would add depth. One of the two would def. be nice.

I honestly wish they would go ahead and give Baby Barker a scholarship.

Syracuse football defensive tackle Kayton Samuels will seek a transfer and use his fifth year of eligibility at another school, he announced Saturday night... As a graduate transfer, the Georgia native will be eligible to play during the 2018 season. In 34 career games, Samuels recorded 44 tackles, including 4.5 for loss.

Sterling Johnson (6-4/305), a rotation defensive lineman at Clemson, is also looking to take a graduate transfer. Johnson appeared in eleven games for the Tigers this season, recording 14 tackles and two sacks in 2017. He was a high school All-American, so the talent is there. And Johnson still has time to make an impact - he's got two years of eligiblity remaining.

Jabril Robinson (6-3/265), a Clemson defensive lineman, has announced his intention to explore the grad transfer market. Robinson played in 11 games for the Tigers in 2017, seeing about 20 snaps per game. He graduated in December. With stiff competition in front of him on the depth chart, it's likely Robinson is looking for more time on the football field somewhere else.

Dylan Thompson (6-5/280), a reserve defensive lineman, is taking a graduate transfer from Ohio State. Thompson's career has been marred by injury and academic issues, and he was able to play his first game for the Buckeyes until 2017. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

You gotta think Saban is going for at least one of these kids. Hopefully Johnson for sure.
