• Auburn's Gene Chizik on defending his 5-19 record at Iowa State:

"It was more or less the perfect storm. The league got great quick. We fought a lot of those great football teams, We were in a bunch of games with a bunch of young guys. We played 11 true freshmen last year.

"I knew that it was tough when I took it. Is it tougher than what I thought when I took it? Probably not. I love challenges and I accept challenges. If I didn't I would have stayed at Texas [as defensive coordinator]. I could have stayed there until I decided until not to."

I wish someone would have taken him to task on that one. Seriously.

Nevada Las-Vegas, Kent, Toledo, Northern Iowa...what do those teams have in common? All beat Iowa State and none of them in the league.

Never mind that 3 of his 5 wins came in conference play or that seven of the 19 losses came against teams with records below .500.

But hey, they did beat a 4-8 Kent team last year...not to mention South Dakota State!!!

I do love the phrase "no one can win at Iowa State" especially when those that say that can't find an answer to how a coach in one year can take Toledo to a 9-2 record.

Ole Miss' Houston Nutt on the hype surrounding his team which is favored to win the SEC West by several outlets: "There is a lot of hype right now. Big anticipation. A lot of expectations. All of that is good, but bottom line it comes back to coaches and players.
On quarterback Jevan Snead:
"If you take the last five as compared to the first five games, Jevan is a different quarterback. Those decisions he was making so much better. In the Texas Tech game, he throws an interception that is returned for a touchdown and he doesn't flinch."

Is Jevan is this year's Matt Stafford in a way?

Just a thought......but I do wonder if Ole Miss will fall prey to the preseason hype and succumb to the pressure of higher expectations. They open their sec schedule on the road at South Carolina. I could see them being in the top ten rankings and having a lot of pressure in that game......

Of course, if we follow Nutt's suggestion on how to look at Snead and his progress...

If we look at the first part of their season we see them facing D-1 teams with winning records, sans Memphis.

If we look at the last part of their season we see them facing D-1 teams with losing records, sans Texas Tech.

I don't care how you break down the last bit of their season.

I'm not taking a thing away from their bowl win other than to comment we've seen what Tx. Tech looks like when they face a strong defense.

But, my point goes hand in hand with...

2-6, 3-5, 2-6 and 2-6.

That's the in conference records of the last four SEC teams they played.

Add a 4-6 overall Louisiana Monroe in there for good measure...

Im already on record predicting USCe beats Ole Piss

Stephen Garcia may be the best QB Spurrier has had since he's been at USCe. If he's on his game, I'd put him head to head with Snead. But, so far he's been as inconsistent as Chris Smelley and Tommy Beecher have been.
