1. The weekly scoring update: Alabama is now averaging 39.4 points per game and has scored 473 total points this season. The school record for points scored is 542 in 2014 and the record for points per game is 43.0 in 1945. We can probably kiss the record for points per game goodbye at this point (it was unlikely after the LSU game). Alabama needs to score 70 points to set the school record for points, which would be 35 points per game in 2 games (SEC + playoff) or 23.3 points per game in 3 games (SEC + playoff + national championship). Florida only allows 14.6 points per game, so donāt expect Alabama to hang 40 next week.
2. Yesterday was Senior Day. Fourth-year seniors have gone 49-5, including 31-3 against SEC opponents, 27-1 at home, with 2 conference championships and a national championship. Fifth-year seniors have gone 62-6, including 39-4 against SEC opponents, 33-2 at home, with 3 SEC championships and 2 national championships. If Alabama wins out, the senior class would have a record of 52-5, 32-3 against SEC teams with 3 conference championships and 2 national championships. That would make this the winningest group of seniors in school history. The 2015 seniors were 50-6 with 2 national championships and 3 conference championships.
3. Auburnās worst rushing game of the season has come against Alabama for the second straight year. The Tigers entered yesterday averaging a hair under 300 yards per game on the ground and 5.7 yards per carry. Then they had 66 rushing yards on 26 carries. Last year, they averaged 196 yards per game and posted 91 rushing yards against Alabama. Auburn hasnāt scored a rushing touchdown against Alabama since 2014.
4. Alabamaās four-minute offense has come through a couple of times in the second half of the season. There was a 9:51 drive in the fourth quarter at LSU (15 plays, 50 yards) that sapped all the energy out of the game. Last night Alabamaās final drive went 58 yards in 15 plays and sucked the final 9:00 of clock off the board to end the game.
5. The third down defense has been good all year but was outstanding last night. Auburn was 2-12 on third down and 0-1 on fourth down. Auburn started the game 0-8 on third down. Teams are averaging .82 yards per carry on third down against Alabama (22 conversions on 73 attempts) and have just 30 passes for first down on 114 attempts. Alabama is 6th nationally in third down defense (53-187, 28.3%) and first nationally in fourth down defense (4-19, 21.1%).
6. Alabamaās streak of not allowing a touchdown on defense has now run to 4:27:54, dating back to Oct. 22. Hereās how many touchdowns the other top 10 scoring defenses have allowed in their last 4:27:54:
Michigan ā 8
Wisconsin ā 6
Ohio State ā 6
Florida ā 10
Auburn ā 6
LSU ā 8
Appalachian State ā 8
Clemson ā 11
Washington ā 12
Temple ā 5
