🏈 No team has had more ranked games and ranked wins since 2015 than @AlabamaFTBL Which team on this list is the most surprising?

Georgia is the most surprising by virtue of being in the SEC East. Would have thought aTm or Mississippi State would be ahead of them. They are the only two SEC West teams not on the list. USC is somewhat surprising by virtue of being Pac12.

Pretty crazy Notre Dame has lost to Georgia both times they played them during this recent home and home. Guess that's why we don't see Notre Dame on this list.

For the six years (2009 - 2014) prior to the six years in this comparison, Bama played 37 ranked teams with a record of 28-9. The winning percentage was 76% versus the Tide winning 85% from 2015 to 2020. If you recall Bama played 8 ranked teams during the 2010 “bye-week” season but lost 3 of those games. Both 6 year spans included 3 NC’s each though the playoff format added one more opportunity to play a ranked team. Any way you slice it Bama has faced more ranked teams over the past 12 years and have won more of those games than any other program.

The thing that really stinks is the B12 conference for example always has a lot of ranked teams early in the season because the “big boys” typically don’t play each other until the last few weeks of the schedule. That means Oklahoma gets credit for playing and beating conference cupcakes posing as ranked teams. The same thing benefits Ohio State. Then in the post season, time and time again the SEC shows just how tough conference play is whether the opponent’s ranked or not.

So three of those six losses are in National Championship games against Clemson, and the one to Ohio State in the Playoff Semi-Final. Wow.

Only season games here

2015 - 5 ranked (1 Non Conference) - 4 ranked at year end (3 Conference, 1 Non)
2016 - 6 ranked teams (2 non conference) 3 ranked at year end
2017 - 3 unique ranked teams played, 4 total (Played TCU twice). All ranked at year end.
2018 - 2 unique ranked teams played, 3 total (Played Texas twice). All ranked at year end.
2019 - 3 unique ranked teams played, 4 total (Played Baylor twice). 2 ranked at year end.
2020 - 3 ranked teams. 3 ranked at year end. They played Iowa State 2 times but the first they were not ranked.

So most of their ranked games are in conference and often they play the same ranked team twice in a year. All of their bowls were against ranked teams and they are 2-4 in those. I come up with 31 ranked games including the double plays so the chart is possibly off (no idea if they include only ranked in both polls or just one).

To me, the most surprising team on this list is USC. The PAC-12 doesn't have too many ranked teams that are legit. I don't have access to their past schedules at the moment, but I bet that a chunk of those ranked games are non-conference. I know Bama was one of them. Stanford and Oregon are probably the ranked team that shows up the most. (and maybe Utah)

And Washington. They played Notre Dame a lot during that period.

Notre Dame and Stanford account for 11 of those 28 (both each year 2015-2019 with Stanford counting twice one year due to the PAC12CG). Utah, Oregon, and Washington just 2 each over that time. Utah (and the rest of their ranked opponents) only 1.

Utah has faced USC twice when they were ranked in the top 10. I know at least three times they've been ranked when facing the Trojans. Oregon sounds right for twice and I'd have to look up Washington again.

I did kind of miss one on Utah (listed them twice as 2 and 1 for some reason so that is where I went wrong), Utah was 3 in 2015, 24 in 2016, 10 in 2017. Washington was 4 in 2016 and 17 in 2019. The two did not play in 2017, 2018, or 2020 and Washington was unranked in 2015. Might be mixing in Washington State, who was ranked in 2017 when they played.
