In a move that could challenge the NCAA's monopoly on elite talent, the NBA's G League is creating a new venture as an alternative to the one-and-done route for the best American basketball prospects, it was announced Thursday.

As part of a newly formed professional path starting in the summer of 2019, the G League will offer "Select Contracts" worth $125,000 to elite prospects who are at least 18 years old but not yet eligible for the NBA draft.

The G League will target recent or would-be high school graduates who otherwise would have likely spent just one season playing college basketball, enticing them not only with a six-figure salary but also the opportunity to benefit from NBA infrastructure, as well as a bevy of off-court development programs "geared toward facilitating and accelerating their transition to the pro game," league president Malcolm Turner told ESPN.

$125,000 a year? That's almost as much as they're getting now.

I see this as a good thing. Maybe it affects the level of corruption in CBB currently (mind you I don't think it eliminates it at all) and we see the college game take a step toward being a little more cohesive and less rock star oriented.

It will also be interesting to see how some of the coaches who have made their bones on recruiting 2-3 one and done players every year do without those type players.

$125,000 will be gone like a fart in the wind!! Kids will be bankrupt and on the streets. Bad move!!!

I think you missed the point. Instead of going to college these blue chip players can go to the G-League and make $125K for one year (and they also provide other things like financial planning, media training, etc.) and then enter the NBA Draft instead of going to college for one year. No one will go bankrupt or be on the streets because of this.

I'm supposing that they still get their other NBA contract if they are called up?

Didn't really read it since I don't have any interest in the NBA. :skeo:

My understanding of the G league is they still enter the draft rather than being called up like minor league baseball. I may be wrong though

Yeah, like someone else said they enter the draft rather than getting called up to another team. I want to say the NBA itself is going to be paying these guys salaries rather than minor league teams (which would mean the NBA team would be paying it).

There's such a huge difference in the style of play... I'm a big fan of the dudes getting paid, legally, when possible... But if I had a stud I'd steer him the college route.

It's gonna be hard for a youngster to dominate those grown ass men who are trying to do you no favors. The top tier college coaches are going to be much better than a D League coach, and the 3 pt line is shorter in college. The offense will be geared more towards you as well. Just a better chance to truly "develop" for a year in college, and plus if you don't dominate you can always go back... up to 3 more years!

I'm assuming the kids that go G-league route give up any chance to go back to college... But if they were allowed to go back then it may be worth it.

No, once you lose that "amateur" tag because you were paid to play you lose college eligibility.

Honestly, I'm just glad this is giving guys a legit opportunity rather than that nonsense JBA league that Lavar Ball started just so his shitty sons have a place to play. There was a couple of kids that got really screwed over because they decided to give it a chance over college. One kid turned down a slew of scholarships and then got cut from the team, so they could make room for LaAngelo when he decided he wanted to play there (after he didnt get drafted) and not only that but he said that LaVar barely paid him a third of the salary his contract called for.

LOL! Yeah, I think Lavar's time is about up. I give him credit for trying to make the most of his opportunity at stardom but Lonzo is destined for an NBA bench role.

I agree though... Good opportunity for someone who needs the quick cash. And it may turn out to be a better route for development. But as of now I would send my kid to the bright lights of nationally televised games, with easier competition and great coaching. 125K nothing to sneeze at though!
