Nick Saban is complaining about something that happens nearly every week

Nick Saban is pretty good at offering criticism. His latest complaint? The quick one-week turnaround between the College Football Playoff and the national championship game.

Alabama will take on Georgia for the title Monday (8 p.m. ET, ESPN). But according to Saban, a week is not enough time to prepare – despite seven days being the norm throughout the regular season when every weekend is critical and has the potential to impact a team’s championship hopes.

This is what he told reporters Tuesday:

Arguably, players are used to having a week to prepare for most games throughout the season, and Alabama actually had a slight advantage going into its Sugar Bowl matchup against Clemson Monday. Because the Crimson Tide lost to Auburn and didn’t make it to the SEC championship game, they had more than five weeks to get ready for the playoff semifinal game. But the Tigers had about four weeks after beating Miami in the ACC championship game.

On the other side of it, Saban might have a point because the aftermath of the Sugar Bowl was nothing like a regular football Saturday in October.

Via ESPN:

Saban said that it wasn’t until after 1 a.m. that Alabama began packing up to leave the Allstate Sugar Bowl after beating Clemson 24-6, which meant that the team needed to spend the night in New Orleans and return to Tuscaloosa in the morning.
To fix this, Saban isn’t looking to extend the college football season by that much. He just wants an extra day in there as the team heads to Atlanta for Monday’s title game.

I saw surfing around earlier this morning and noticed several instances where fans who "don't care for Saban/Alabama" were offering up their opinions on this. To a person, following the script they've always followed when Saban's opinions get air time, they were saying "Saban's complaining like a little bitch again."

I can't say it is strange no one mentioned that Kirby Smart said the same thing less than an hour after the conclusion of the Rose Bowl.

Had it been Urban Meyer throwing out this criticism, the media and fans would "all be on board"!

Personally I would be calling Urban a little bitch... Or making a smurky heart attack comment.

I see Saban's point because you want teams at a high level physically if possible. But regardless, I see it like golfers complaining about the golf course conditions. If all competitors have the same circumstances, it's fair game.

This is the 4th installment of the 4 team playoff. What week is not like the other 3? If the only coach who has been a part of all 4 calls it like it is, he's probably the most entitled anyway.

On a personal note, I would agree they need to put this championship game on a Saturday and do something practical for all the fans spending the money and doing all the traveling.

I saw 3 guys yesterday Mattich/Huard and someone else discussing this yesterday. Huard was the only one calling Saban out on this. Used the argument that you do this every week and said if this was the NFL complaining about playing on Sunday and then again on Thursday it might be a legitimate grip.

Ironically, it is almost the same time schedule as a short week in the NFL. Team travels on Friday (3 days before the game). They will get some practice time in, but not like the normal routine of a regular football week. Take into account all the interviews and media crap surrounding the Championship Game......they really need to push this off to a Thurs/Friday of the following week. Gives each team an extra day to rest/prep ect. Also, you will always have a scenario where one team has to travel a greater distance than the other (Georgia at the Rose Bowl). Just makes sense, and it shouldn't affect the NFL or any of their games.

I would too! Reality is, people love to hate Saban and BAMA! Anytime Saban brings up a legitimate issue, other fans go off on a rant. He has mentioned for what, the last 3-4 years, about the SEC should go to a 9 game schedule. What happens? The conference votes 13-1 in favor of staying put!!
As far as prep time, we all know that Saban is ALL about prepping!!! He leaves no stone unturned!! I imagine that he had analysts looking at film for the time KS has been at UGA and the time Chaney has been calling plays looking for any and every tendency. I would believe it was done when we were first announced that we would be in the CFP. All 3 teams were scouted!! Another day or two is what he wants to make sure the kids get all of the information processed.
But, we all know that the CFP has to be finished before the NFL playoffs really get going past their wildcard games. Sucks!

His point was also you spend all week prior to the first playoff game doing interviews and appearances and will do similar for the championship game. There is nothing "normal" about what is going on this week before the championship. He also said that he thought two weeks off was too much, that one extra day would be good.

I agree with you here. NFL can move to Sunday and Monday with their Wild Card. They already own Sunday and Monday nights with their regular broadcasting. They are asking a ton out of fans to travel two weekends in a row to games that costs five times as much on the ticket front (face value). Around Christmas and New Years it also squeezes PTO and Vacation days from most of us that work. With the late starts and early morning finishes, they will suck the life out of their audience on a Monday right after New years.

Right...nothing normal about this...
The 1 week is normal....players get day off after game..usually Sunday...
If the next is a "away game" on Saturday..the travel friday....sleep in get ready for game day...
The difference is....this game requires the teams to be in Atlanta...on friday...that 3 days before the game day...
Could have played any day....but the GODLY espn....tv....has to have on a monday...
But they could have put players on a bus and been in ttown in 4-5 hours...sleep in rest of sunday..these guys recover fast..nothing more tiring the being on a plane anyway...get on bus to plane...sit and wait for plane to Birmingham...unload on bus...ride an hour to campus......really????

"Arguably, players are used..." That quote from the original article could have stopped right there.

I think the best argument for the timing of the game right now is that we all have to get up and go to work the next morning. The NCAA is damaging the productivity of the masses. Trump should do something about this. Let's make America great again. Move the game to a Saturday; God doesn't mind if we're sleepy at church on Sunday morning.

And move up the start time... these 8pm or later start times are a killer...

Who has an advantage here?

UGA plays on the west coast and flies back.
Bama plays in New Orleans and flies back.
Advantage, Bama.

Bama flies to ATL for game prep including practices.
UGA stays at home and is practicing in Athens.
Advantage, UGA.

Pretty well balances out in the long run, eh?

We know Nick likes to get away from distractions....
......and does well in big games on the road ( well...at home too)...
I dont know where the advatages are on this one....
Crowd will be 60-40 UGA....both have played in dome and played well...
NS and Bama....experience in big games...
Seems most things are advantage equal....except NS....80% in NC games..and UGA dont got no Deshaun Watson

It has me thinking back to why Dabo chose to practice at Tulane--a decision I'm still wondering a bit as to why?

Was he accusing us of spying? Would that have gotten back to our players just that way?

I think Dabo is a superstitious guy. Same 92 Tulane field, the same 92 Hotel. When he sprinkled grass on the Superdome, that was weird. Where's my Bud, I'm getting thirsty.

During the season, teams are not required to have a press day, travel to the game location early (in the middle of the practice week), participate in onsite social events, find some way/place to watch game film, or travel by bus to every activity including practice. While the number of days between games may be consistent with the regular season, the amount of activity required is very different.
