also Julio Jones: 2008 SEC freshman of the year. Congrats to their accomplishments. ;tr
Alabama's Nick Saban is the 2008 SEC coach of the year, and former Foley standout receiver Julio Jones is 2008 SEC freshman of the year, according to the Associated Press' all-SEC media vote released today.

Six Crimson Tide players were named first-team all-SEC: Tailback Glen Coffee, left tackle Andre Smith, center Antoine Caldwell, nose tackle Terrence Cody, linebacker Rolando McClain and safety Rashad Johnson. Smith and Johnson were unanimous inclusions.

Jones, left guard Mike Johnson and Javier Arenas (as a cornerback) were second-team all-SEC.

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was the SEC offensive player of the year, while Tennessee safety Eric Berry was SEC defensive player of the year.

Now if we could just make that voting push once they release the top ten finalists for the National Coach of the Year. Congrats CNS and Julio!!

Congrats to both Julio and Coach Saban.

I know I will hear tomorrow from a Georgia fan that I work with that AJ Green was more deserving of this recognition because he lead the SEC in receiving and was a 1st team selection.

But Julio didn't get completly shut down in a single
game this year...AJ did...Roll Tide!

Both deserve these awards.

The job Saban did this year was amazing. That has to be one of the best turnarounds I have ever seen. And I can't say enough about Julio. It is going to be fun to watch him grow, especially when we have another receiver to compliment him.

Green had a superb year, and both were pretty equally deserving of the award. I will say this about Julio though... he didn't have the best QB in the nation getting the ball to him, and someone like Mohamed Massaquoi on the other side of the field demanding equal respect from the defense, Green did. From the mid point of the season on, teams keyed on Julio, but he still made the plays.

Both of those guys are going to be fun to watch for the next 2 seasons though. Amazing to think how good they are going to be 24 months from now.

Not to mention Julio put up very respectable numbers in a run oriented offense whereas AJ was one of the prime aspects of a more pass happy offense with a future NFL quarterback.

If there was anything that should be questioned about the WR's, I'd say it choosing Brandon LaFell over Percy Harvin. That one shocked me.

I would have chosen Rennie Curran over South Carolina's Eric Norwood as well. Curran had almost 2X as many tackles as Norwood did this year. I'm supposing the reason Norwood got the nod was his 9 sacks vs Curran's three. BUT, 109 tackles vs 66...

Pretty much the argument I gave today. Of course, in the end I told him both were deserving and if it were based only on stats then I wouldn't have a problem with Green getting it but I went further to say that it will be interesting to watch how the stats are next year if Stafford goes pro and we are more balanced with pass/run.
