...which would be a step in the right direction, IMO. Extend that to players that were ineligible due to rules violations, extend it as well to coaches jumping ship, IE: Kelly, and they're definitely moving in the right direction.

In response to Bruce Feldman's report that the NFL is considering banning academically ineligible players from attending the NFL Combine, CollegeFootballTalk.com writer Ben Kerchevel detailed why he thinks the NFL would be making a major mistake.

Kerchevel wrote, "But, most importantly, requiring players to be academically eligible for the combine won't do what it's supposedly intended to do: reduce bad apples. Players won't strive for greatness in their lives because a minimum academic bar has been set. If anything, they'll strive for that bar and that bar only, and use whatever means necessary, good or bad, to get past the detraction."

Meanwhile, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com wrote, "Unless the goal is to generate some P.R. that will make the casual fan think the NFL is serious about the problem. If the NFL really is serious about the problem, however, this isn't the way to solve it."

In theory, it's nice to know the NFL wants college players to succeed academically, but this isn't the right approach. If academic progress is viewed so importantly, why not implement a new rule: Players that enter the league from this point on without a college degree must continue to enroll in at least one class per semester, and at least 3 classes per calendar year, while they remain on active on an NFL roster.

Thus, it essentially become a matter of - You're going to have to do it, so you might as well do it while you're in college.
