🏈 News and notes: Tide's McCarron has moved up the depth chart

Before anyone blows a stint about possibly burning a red-shirt, understand something about this move.

If Bama goes up big against any of the remaining teams (UTC) we will see Star Jackson in mop up duty. McCarron won't lose a red-shirt for mop up duty.

Now, if GMac were to be injured....badly enough to be out for a game, two games, or the season, we would most likely see AJ get the nod over Star. This is something that myself and a few other have discussed in the last week.

So, nobody start freaking out about burning AJ's red-shirt against UTC.

Well Mcelroy stay will for his SR year. Then it'll be Jackson at QB for the next 2 years. Then McAron should get a shot. We're so deep at QB its not even funny. Anybody could step in right now and be productive. Don't forget we're bringing in Phillip Simms next year to.

Hmm. I'll try this a different way. The only reason AJ isn't officially at #2 on the depth chart right now is because of the red-shirt. IF GMac gets hurt, AJ steps in, not Jackson. Which means that AJ will start spring at #2.

Star will shop around for a tansfer next Spring. There will be atrition at the QB position that is pretty much a given.

Thats good news, he will probably battle for the starting job next year.

But before anyone gets worked up, itd have to be night and day for a first year starter to get the nod over a 5th year returning starter(who i am still convined, will be very very good if not this year then next)

2011 is gonnna be a big knockdown fight at QB though.

I just dont get where the 'if G-Mac got hurt AJ would start' stuff comes from. In the limited playing time Star has had he's looked good, AJ has never taken a snap in college and is about as skinny as Brodie was when he first came to Bama.

I don't understand what's so difficult to understand about AJ gets the nod if Greg gets hurt. It's pretty simple to me.

As to AJ's size. He's already got 15, maybe 20lbs on Brodie. And, he's also a good two and a half inches taller than Brodie. The kid is filling out well for someone his age.

I don't disagree that Star has looked good when he's played against North Texas. He was 9 for 13 in that game. Hell, Greg was 13 for 15 in that game.

But, all you've seen in the other contest is Star handing the ball off to a running back.

I can not believe anyone is thinking that GMac will be challenged for the starting position. First year QBs are supposed to have a hard time, yet we can not have a talk about this year's National Championship race without including a GMac lead Crimson Tide. Remarkable job.

I look at who is left and can't build a defensable argument for why these unproven prospects could be justifiably started at the cost of benching GMac. GMac is the Offense's leader, the others are not close. Batlle hardened means big things in this league.

It's hard to understand because I haven't had a chance to see any of them in practice like Coach Saban or anyone else and because like I said Star has played in a game, while AJ has watched on the sideline.

I would venture to guess that if A.J has moved up to #2 its probably not close between himself and Star/Darrah. According to Terry he has put on 15-20 pounds so far. I believe he matched up physically (arm strength etc..) to Star and Darrah and it was more of him having to learn the offense and get comfortable. I couldn't imagine him being moved to #2 if there were still questions about his size or knowledge of plays which again leads me to believe that he has far surpassed Star and Darrah.

That never dawned on me...as in, that's where you were coming from.
