This seems to be a new trend, locking up a future head coach before the current head coach is done. FSU did it with Jim-Dog Fisher, Garrett at Dallas, Caldwell at Indy, and now Kentucky. I guess as coaching changes become all the more frequent in college and the NFL, teams feel they need to do this to create any kind of stability. Perhaps, twenty years from now, ADs will have their next 3 or 4 coaches lined up. We’ll be having a press conference that goes something like…
“Today I’m here to announce the Coach Kirby Smart is stepping down as Alabama’s head coach and as stipulated in his contract, that means that Coach Freddie Kitchens will now be stepping in as head coach. I must now begin my search for Coach Kitchen’s successor’s successor’s successor. It will be an exhaustive search, one which will include coaches AND players from both the NFL and College. Heck, we may even look to our current crop of committed prospects for a future head coach.”
