The NCAA is investigating the Arizona men's basketball program, a university spokesman
confirmed to the Arizona Daily Star on Friday.
This is the first time on record that the university has confirmed the program is being investigated by the NCAA. Earlier this year, additional schools were reportedly involved in a
bribery scheme that included Arizona, leading to the FBI looking into corruption and fraud at college basketball's highest level.
Via
Wildcat Authority, Thursday was the last day of testimony in the federal bribery case and although there were no wiretaps or videos that included head coach Sean Miller, Merl Code's defense attorney Mark Moore tried to bring up the Arizona coach when questioning Christian Dawkins.
Earlier in the week, former Arizona assistant Emanuel "Book" Richardson was recorded on a call in 2017 telling the former agent-runner Dawkins that Miller was paying former Arizona big man Deandre Ayton $10,000 per month while he was enrolled at the school.
Miller
released a statement in March, in part saying: "Let me be very very clear: I have never discussed with Christian Dawkins paying Deandre Ayton to attend the University of Arizona. In fact, I never even met or spoke to Christian Dawkins until after Deandre publicly announced he was coming to our school. Any reporting to the contrary is inaccurate, false and defamatory."
Miller could be subject to penalties ā and vacating of previous wins ā even if a jury finds that he is not directly responsible for payment to players under
NCAA bylaw 11.1.1.1.
Under that bylaw, "the head coach will be held accountable for violations in the program unless he or she can rebut the presumption of responsibility."
