📝 National Signing Day - 2018

I don't want to see this happen at all, but it wouldn't surprise me if both Hurts and Jones were not on the 2019 roster.

And yes, Tyson is a really good QB! Thompson v. Hewitt-Trussville in the playoffs will be a media circus, a really thrilling game to see.

Per Andrew Bone @ 4 p.m.:

Brock Purdy
-I spoke with him earlier today after his visit to A&M. He said he is still in communication with Jeff Banks. He said Alabama has yet to give him an answer regarding the opportunity to commit.

Justyn Ross
-The five-star WR did not take an official visit this weekend. I expect him to choose between Alabama and Clemson on Wednesday. I still like Alabama’s chances.

Jaylen Waddle
-This has definitely become an intense battle between Alabama and Texas A&M. Alabama has been the favorite for several months. Jimbo Fisher and his staff have done a very good job recruiting him. A&M tried to get Waddle to visit this weekend, but it did not happen. It doesn’t mean A&M is out of the race. I still like Alabama here.

Jacob Copeland
-Copeland took an official visit to Florida this weekend. The former Gator commitment was in Tuscaloosa last week. Nick Saban had an in-home visit on Thursday. Seems like things are very close between Alabama and Florida. It will surprise me if he ends up at FSU or Tennessee.

Glenn Beal
-I mentioned last week about the Louisiana tight end having an opportunity to commit to Alabama. We’ll see if Alabama sends him scholarship papers on Tuesday. UA will send scholarship papers to all it will accept commitments from on signing day.

Nick Petit-Frère
-A very tough prospect to read as he does not speak to the media. He took an official visit to Ohio State this weekend. A few people I spoke with prior to the visit believed his favorites were Alabama and Florida. I haven’t heard anything about his visit to Ohio State yet. I reached out to a few Ohio State contacts who have also not heard anything about the trip.

Penei Sewell
-I’ve heard some different things on Sewell in the last few days. One said he is down to Alabama and Oregon. Another said it’s between Oregon and Utah. His family and some other people very close to him have been pushing Alabama. I’ve said all along that Sewell appears to want to stay closer to home. That’s the way I see it happening this week.

Bobby Brown
-I have talked to a few different people on the Alabama and A&M side. No one seems to know what Brown will do on Wednesday. He took a two-day unofficial visit to A&M this weekend. He was in Tuscaloosa a few weekends ago with his family for the championship celebration. It’s definitely a little nerve racking for Alabama. There isn’t a solid answer here. I don’t know what he will do at this time.

Malik Langham
-Langham took his final official visit to Auburn this weekend. I know some Auburn people have started feeling more confident. I spoke with a few people close to Langham who said prior to the visit he was a very strong lean to Alabama. Those people did not expect things to change. I think Auburn is in it, but I still feel very good about Langham signing with Alabama on Wednesday.

Quay Walker
-Walker took an official visit to Georgia this weekend. The Bulldogs had ground to make up with Walker if there is a chance of him signing with the in-state school. There isn’t much new to report. He was on campus until after lunch. Tennessee seems confident, but IMO its a toss-up as to what he will do.

Vernon Jackson
-Jackson took an official visit to Texas A&M this weekend. Alabama is still hoping to keep Jackson on board. He will talk with his family about his options the next day or two. This is another one that is hard to gauge. It will likely come down to Alabama and A&M. I don’t think he will end up at Texas or TCU.

Jaylen Moody
-The linebacker from South Carolina took an official visit to Alabama this weekend. He is hoping to hear word from Alabama sooner regarding his opportunity to sign with the Crimson Tide. A green light to Moody will indicate Alabama losing Walker or Jackson. Alabama hopes to know a final decision from the current commitments in the next 24-48 hours.

Patrick Surtain Jr.
-No word yet on how things went with Surtain’s visit to Miami this weekend. Alabama had the edge prior to the visit according to people in south Florida. I definitely will not rule out LSU. The Tigers are definitely a threat. I am just going by what I’ve been told on multiple fronts. LSU still seems confident.

Tyson Campbell
-Also haven’t heard much regarding Campbell’s visit to Miami. The same person in south Florida did not consider Miami a major threat prior to the weekend. Alabama is in it a lot more than people tend to believe. Campbell will choose Alabama or Georgia on Wednesday IMO.

Eddie Smith
-Smith did not take an official visit this weekend. He will announce on signing day between Alabama, Mississippi State and Tennessee. I expect Smith to choose Alabama.

Isaac Taylor-Stuart
-ITS visited Knoxville this weekend. He had high remarks regarding his trip to Tennessee. This is a situation where we don’t know where things stand on different sides. Alabama is hoping to get three DBs on board this upcoming week. Can Alabama pull off a major upset by getting Surtain and Campbell to go along with Eddie Smith? Will Alabama take four DBs?

Olajiah Griffin
-The five-star DB did not take an official visit this weekend. He was in Tuscaloosa last week. The word is he wants to play in the SEC- Alabama or Tennessee. His family prefers him to stay closer to home which makes me believe he will choose USC or Oregon.

Good stuff definitely nerve racking

AU notes ya'll might be interested in

- AU's huge push for JaMarr Chase this weekend pretty much confirmed what was already known that AU is out of race for Justyn Ross. We will just be hat on the table

- Feeling is AU gave best shot at Langham & might even have the dad favoring the Tigers. But hard to get read on Malik & his mom. Concern is we got into the race too late. Should know by EOD what he's gonna do. Probably Bama

- KN says no one really knows WTF Walker is gonna do. He continues to hear TEN is probably the favorite & biggest surprise would be him sticking with Bama. But also admits that Walker could probably pick any of the 4 finalists at this point. He could have decision by EOD as well

We’re two days away from National Signing Day, and there’s still a lot of uncertainty surrounding Alabama’s finish to its 2018 recruiting class.
What we do know is that the Crimson Tide can sign 23 players this cycle, according to a source close to the program who confirmed that number on Sunday night. Alabama currently has 14 signees and four commitments. Before we get to the predictions on who we believe is going to fill the class, our educated guesses are based on 4-star linebacker commitments Vernon Jackson (Texas A&M) and Quay Walker (Georgia or Tennessee) flipping. If that happens, that would mean Alabama has seven spots to fill come Wednesday.
We’re going to rank the following players by level of confidence, starting with the player who SEC Country is most confident in the team landing.
Predicting Alabama’s 2018 recruiting class finish
3-star CB Eddie Smith (Slidell, La.) — Alabama, Mississippi State, Tennessee

Eddie Smith, the cousin of championship hero DeVonta Smith, was offered by Alabama earlier this month and immediately became a priority target for the Crimson Tide.
On his official visit a few weeks ago, Smith told SEC Country that he spent lots of time with Nick Saban, who told the recruit about the opportunity he would have if he chose the Tide. Smith said knowing that Saban would be coaching him gives Alabama an advantage over Mississippi State and Tennessee, which are his two other finalists.
Going into Wednesday’s decision, how would Smith classify Alabama’s chances of landing his signature?
“They have a great, great, great shot,” Smith said. “It’s going to be a tough decision. All I can do now is pray and talk to my family about it and trust God is going to guide me to the right school.
“Winning a national championship is every recruit’s dream. You go to Alabama and you’re going to have a great, great shot at it. Holding that crystal ball trophy is like a dream come true. I really want to win a championship when I’m in college. It’s a big goal of mine. I’m one step closer to my dream.”
4-star DE Malik Langham (Huntsville, Ala.) — Alabama, Auburn, Florida
Malik Langham took an official visit to Auburn, his favorite school growing up, this past weekend. While that is a cause for concern, Alabama had a big lead over Auburn and Florida heading into his trip.
Alabama wants to add at least one more defensive lineman to its current group of signees in Christian Barmore and Stephon Wynn plus commitment Bobby Brown, who visited Texas A&M this past weekend but I expect him to stick with the Tide. Langham is the only uncommitted target that Alabama is still considering at this point.
Langham told SEC Country on Sunday why he would choose Alabama.
“Everything. You know, with Alabama, they’re a championship team,” Langham said. “[Defensive line] Coach [Karl] Dunbar and [co-defensive coordinator Tosh] Lupoi have a great relationship with me. Them just being close to home, in-state school, and it’s the focal point of college football.”
4-star WR Justyn Ross (Phenix City, Ala.) — Alabama, Auburn, Clemson
For several months, it seemed like the state of Alabama’s No. 1 prospect was going to play his college football for Clemson. That has changed as we’ve gotten closer to Signing Day.
Alabama started to feel good about Ross a little over a month ago, even after his primary recruiter, defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley, left for the Oakland Raiders. Offensive coordinator Mike Locksley, who Ross already had a good relationship with, stepped in and took over the recruitment of the Under Armour All-American. We’ve also been told that Ross is impressed with new wide receivers coach Josh Gattis and his ability to develop top talent at Penn State.
Ross told SEC Country earlier this month at the Under Armour Game that his grandma wants him to choose a school in Alabama, while his mother likes Clemson, but she’ll be fine with whichever school he chooses.
3-star LB Jaylen Moody (Conway, S.C.) — Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss
Jaylen Moody received an offer from Alabama last week. As stated above, if Vernon Jackson and/or Quay Walker end up flipping, then Moody is going to get the green light to commit.
Moody may only need one of them to leave this class because Glenn Beal isn’t a certainty to sign with the Tide.
4-star WR Jaylen Waddle, 4-star WR (Bellaire, Texas) — Alabama, Texas A&M
Jaylen Waddle was silently committed to Alabama for several months. When Texas A&M hired Jimbo Fisher, Waddle started leaning toward the Aggies. But in the past couple of weeks, Alabama sources have started to regain the confidence they had throughout the fall.
This recruitment could definitely go either way.
5-star CB Patrick Surtain Jr. (Plantation, Fla.) — Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Miami
This is another recruitment that could go either way come Wednesday. I do think that it’s going to come down to Alabama and LSU, despite him taking an official visit to Miami this past weekend.
Alabama has chipped away at LSU’s lead over the past several months. Several sources on Alabama’s side of things and sources in South Florida have felt like the Tide hold a slight edge now.
“I’ve been looking at it like they’re [Alabama] losing a lot of defensive backs, so there’s a high chance I can come in and compete and play as a freshman,” Surtain said earlier this month. “On the LSU side, they’re losing a lot of defensive backs, too, and I look at it like I have the chance to compete and play at a high level.”
It has to be noted that Surtain has strong family ties to Louisiana and has been to LSU frequently throughout his recruitment. It’s going to be a tough battle, but I think Saban beats out Ed Orgeron on the recruiting trail.
3-star TE Glenn Beal (New Orleans) — Alabama, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Texas A&M
SEC Country received word on Sunday that Glenn Beal does, in fact, have a committable offer. Tennessee and Texas A&M are Alabama’s biggest competitors to land Beal. He was close to committing to the Aggies on several occasions, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him wind up at Texas A&M.
I do know that Saban is a big fan of Beal’s game. We’ll see whether or not his official visit to Tuscaloosa last weekend is enough for him to end up at Alabama.

The battle for the No. 1 class

Those tight recruiting battles will decide who wins the 247Sports Recruiting National Championship.

Three teams appear to be in play.

A new champion appears likely.

Ohio State is narrowly ahead of Georgia at No. 1, with Alabama sitting back at No. 6. However, the Tide is still within striking distance of a No. 1 finish for an eighth straight years, given the targets they have left on the board.

The Buckeyes’ top targets remaining are Petit-Frere and Top247 offensive tackle Rasheed Walker. Over in Athens, Georgia is considered the heavy favorite for five-star cornerback Tyson Campbell while also battling for Top247 five-star linebacker Quay Walker, among others. Alabama is working to keep Walker in the fold and besides Petit-Frere, Surtain and Taylor-Stuart, the Crimson Tide has the longest line of ballyhooed recruits of the three still in play including receivers Jaylen Waddle and Justyn Ross.

The battle for National Recruiter of the Year

Georgia running backs coach Dell McGee has sat at No. 1 for much of the cycle. He was key in the Bulldogs landing Justin Fields, Jamaree Salyer, Zamir White and Brenton Cox. Right behind him is … Bulldogs offensive line coach Sam Pittman. He was also in on Salyer and recruited Trey Hill and Cade Mays. Those guys are in the clubhouse with Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford and Texas cornerbacks coach Jason Washington Nos. 3 and No. 4. The two that could possibly challenge McGee are sitting at No. 5 and No. 6 in USC’s Johnny Nansen and Alabama’s Tosh Lupoi. Both are the lead recruiter on a couple more blue-chippers.

Patrick Surtain

Patrick Surtain Jr., the nation’s No. 1 cornerback in the 2018 class, will have Alabama, Clemson, LSU and Miami hats on the table when he makes his decision on National Signing Day this Wednesday.

Alabama is hoping to add Surtain to 4-star prospects Jalyn Armour-Davis, Josh Jobe and Saivion Smith, who all signed during the early signing period. The Crimson Tide have chipped away at LSU’s lead over the past several months, and it seems like his decision is going to come down to the SEC West schools.

What did Alabama do to close the gap on LSU?

“Nothing much. I just needed to visit them, take the official [visit] and I enjoyed myself there,” Surtain told SEC Country.

LSU led for the majority of his recruitment because Surtain said he felt comfortable with the atmosphere and environment. One of the reasons for that is because Surtain has a lot of family living in Louisiana.

But even with him declaring LSU as his leader for over a year, he never committed to the school. Surtain said the reason for that is because he started to like other schools when he started taking visits. Surtain said he didn’t want to commit early and then have to reopen his process back up.

With a decision coming on Wednesday, Surtain said he still isn’t sure which school he’s going to end up picking. He’s hoping to have that decision made up on Monday night.

“It’s kind of stressful right now, but it’s decision time, so it’ll come,” Surtain said. “I’ve got an idea, but I’ve still got to sit down and make [the decision].”

Alabama will have to replace every single starter in the secondary heading into next season. The Tide also failed to sign a true cornerback in the 2017 class. The opportunity for early playing time is there in Tuscaloosa, but Surtain said what each school’s depth chart looks like is not going to be a factor.

“I’m just really going in to compete,” he said.

The Tide lost defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley to the Oakland Raiders at the end of the season, but Surtain has formed a relationship with new DBs coach Karl Scott already. Surtain said he “sort of got a good relationship with him.”

But it helps Alabama’s chances with Surtain because Nick Saban has a big role in coaching the secondary.

“It’s a great thing when the head coach will most likely be around the DBs,” Surtain said. “He knows a lot about what to expect out of his DBs and he makes them play at a high level.”

Both Alabama and LSU offer lots of similar things to Surtain, but he said the one thing that the Tide have over the Tigers is, “Obviously, one program wins more. That’s probably the biggest [thing].” And he said the one thing LSU offers over Alabama is his ties to his family in Louisiana.

So, in the end, from an outsider’s perspective, it seems like Surtain’s decision is going to come down to comfortability or the possibility at competing for championships.

He broke down the reasons for why he’d choose either school.

On LSU: “Just because of my relationship and my Louisiana ties with my family being there. Me and [defensive backs] Coach [Corey] Raymond, we’ve got a great relationship and I feel like I can ball and have a great influence on Louisiana, too.”

On Alabama: “Just the culture, the winning culture and I feel like I could ball there, as well.”

We’ll know what Surtain decides to do on Wednesday when he’s scheduled to make his decision known during the 10 a.m. ET hour on ESPNU.

LSU take on Surtain

By James Smith James_C_Smith@nola.com,

Five-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. is set to announce his decision on National Signing Day on Wednesday, with LSU and Alabama in a dogfight for the nation's top cornerback prospect.

LSU held a lead for nearly the entirety of Surtain's recruitment, prior to a late surge by Alabama, with his official visit to Tuscaloosa giving the Crimson Tide an opportunity to close the gap last month. Like LSU, Alabama has a major need at cornerback, and the opportunity to be coached by Nick Saban, who specializes in defensive backs, would be appealing to the talented prospect.

But LSU is able to counter with defensive backs coach Corey Raymond, who built a strong bond with the Surtains during the recruiting process. As the emotion of his official visit to Alabama subsided, LSU was able to re-establish itself as the leader for his services.

The closer:

Raymond has been vital in LSU's recruitment of Surtain, and the desire to play for him is simply too much for the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder to pass up. As Alabama continued to press Surtain, Raymond stayed the course, remained open and honest in his message, and gave him the space he needed to not feel pressured, which worked in LSU's favor.

Raymond elected to let Surtain visit Alabama without the persistent phone calls and text that recruits often receive during a time like that. The two were back on the line together that following Monday, with Raymond reiterating his message -- this is where you want and need to be. The Tigers sent numerous coaches to south Florida to meet with the Surtains in the following weeks, in hopes of reigniting that passion about LSU football that the five-star had since he first put on pads.

Confidence from LSU's side remained high throughout the entire process, despite Alabama's efforts. Raymond has shown the ability to close out the recruitment of defensive backs during his tenure at LSU, landing the vast majority of prospects he is chasing at this stage of the process.

Confidence level: 75 percent

Look, there is no such thing as a certainty in recruiting. When talking to sources on all three sides, the consensus is that LSU leads, but the fight is not over. But experience tells me that the team chasing usually has to become the established leader prior to the start of the NCAA dead period, which is already underway, and the Crimson Tide does not appear to be in that position.

Corndogs getting nervous and for good reason....

"*** Things are quiet on the Patrick Surtain Jr. front. He and his family are talking everything over. They are still in talks with LSU and conversations haven’t given the Tigers any reason not to feel good about their chances. There will come a time where they reach out to all the coaches and let them know of a decision, and that will come before Wednesday from what I’ve gathered. I’ve been talking with folks at Clemson, Miami and Alabama and the feeling is that it’s LSU vs. Alabama. Miami side feels like it would be a shocker if they pulled it off. Same for Clemson. All signs point to it being the Tigers vs. Tide. He’s called LSU his leader for nearly all of his recruitment, but I can tell you that Alabama is making him think. I have not heard enough just yet from LSU or Alabama sides to move my prediction off of LSU, though. Again, I don’t think it’s a lock and I was obviously more confident before he took all his visits. This is one we will monitor until he takes the podium at 9 a.m. CST on Wednesday."

My feeling: LSU is very concerned.
