📝 National Signing Day - 2018

Where things stand with Brevin White, Bama vs Princeton

Brevin White went into last weekend expecting to stick with his commitment to Princeton.

Now, that may not happen.

Alabama made such an impression during the four-star quarterback's official visit to Tuscaloosa last weekend that he's now strongly considering signing with the Crimson Tide.

It's down to Alabama and, yes, Princeton. A rare Alabama-Princeton recruiting battle.

"I think it's now pretty 50-50," said Dean Herrington, White's high school coach.

Alabama wants to sign a quarterback in this year's recruiting class and White appears to be the one that Bama covets most out of the three or four possibilities.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Lancaster, California native is the 13th-best pro-style quarterback in this year's class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

White, who has been committed to Princeton since July, impressed new Tide quarterbacks coach Dan Enos during the visit last weekend.

Enos called Herrington later on and told him, "Man, he got up on the white board and you'd be proud. He just knocked it out of the park."
"They were really impressed with his football knowledge and everything," Herrington said.

Herrington thinks White will make a decision by the end of the week.

According to Herrington, Alabama told White after the official visit to think about things for a week and that the spot is his if he wants it.

"With Princeton, a degree from Princeton goes a long way," Herrington said. "He wants to get into business finance and work on Wall Street, and there's a lot of contacts if you graduate from Princeton. But, there's also a lot of contacts at Alabama, especially with Coach Saban. It's just a (matter) of what he wants to do. But he's different than most kids. He's thinking about the academic side and the post-graduate side, but he's just got to sort it out for himself and see what he wants."

Where things stand in rare Alabama-Princeton recruiting battle

5* recruits are very nice but player development is more important. The thing that really matters, imo, is how the coaching staff develops that recruit once he gets in the program. Has Clemson ever had a top 5 recruiting class? I don't remember one but they have done an excellent job of developing the players they signed.

Visit updates for last night, today and tomorrow:

- Karl Dunbar had issues traveling to Huntsville yesterday to see Malik Langham, but they did Skype each other. A source says Florida, not Auburn, is our main competition for him. Langham is a silent commitment already.

- Tosh is visiting Bobby Brown tomorrow before Brown's trip to A&M. Moro Ojomo looks to be a backup plan if Brown flips.

- Saban is going in-home with Jacob Copeland today.

- Pannunzio and Karl Scott are visiting Patrick Surtain and Tyson Campbell today.

- Brevin White has till tomorrow to give Bama his decision. He's #1 target for QB.

I guess I would be as excited as anyone over an Ivy education, especially if I had specific secular goals for myself. But White and family are going to get one helluva bill at the end of 4 years at Princeton. If I'm an outstanding QB with perhaps some goals concerning this as well, I would be thinking long and hard about championships and a debt-free education.

A few things to add to this from some things learned around lunchtime today...

- Karl Dunbar had issues traveling to Huntsville yesterday to see Malik Langham, but they did Skype each other. A source says Florida, not Auburn, is our main competition for him. Langham is a silent commitment already.
He's still scheduled to visit Auburn this weekend.

- Tosh is visiting Bobby Brown tomorrow before Brown's trip to A&M. Moro Ojomo looks to be a backup plan if Brown flips.
There's a chance he might take another visit to Tuscaloosa this weekend as well. Things could get a little confusing (on the news front and with this recruitment) if he ends up at A&M this weekend. He's been indicating he's planning on signing with Bama ... we'll have to wait and let it play out as of today, IMO.

I really hadn't paid any attention to Ojomo until these last few days when his name popped up. He's being recruited by some of the blue bloods like OU, UT, ND, etc. As of this morning he was scheduled to visit Oregon but the Bama staff has been trying to work out a scenario to get him to Tuscaloosa this weekend.

Saban is going in-home with Jacob Copeland today.

Personal opinion: Scratch signing another ILB if we can add Copeland to Waddle and Ross. That said, I'm still of the understanding the Tide plans to take two more receivers. Fisher is doing his (you'll be the next Kirk with Waddle while Clemson and Auburn are making some hard runs at Ross.

- Pannunzio and Karl Scott are visiting Patrick Surtain and Tyson Campbell today.

I've heard Tosh plans to join those two.

- Brevin White has till tomorrow to give Bama his decision. He's #1 target for QB.
One thing to note here. Princeton is an academic scholarship situation. He could fit in as a preferred walk-on and a grey shirt is another possibility.

Personal thoughts:

I would love to see Campbell simply because Kirby wants him so badly. It's a guarantee Bama plans on taking two defensive backs. If they take three? Again, this is a real fluid situation with things changing quickly...sometimes daily. Good lord would I like to see ITS in Crimson--multiple role player.

I've seen it suggested but haven't taken the time to see if it's true ...but word has it Jaylen Moody was offered a preferred walk-on role in South Carolina. That's something where an offer like a 'shirt would come into play.

It's funny to me not a lot has changed in the last couple of weeks except a few minor details here and there. I'm still as confident as I've ever been on how good this class is going to be.

Wednesday is a long way away from where I'm sitting.

Alabama is currently expected to have two official visitors on campus. Leon O'Neal, Rivals100 safety from Cypress Springs High School in Cypress, Texas, and Jaylen Moody, two-star linebacker from Conway High School in South Carolina. Alabama commitment Michael Parker, four-star tight end from Westminster Christian in Huntsville, will return to Tuscaloosa on Saturday for an unofficial visit.

Per Andrew Bone:

Alabama is still working a few other recruits today with hopes of getting them to travel to Tuscaloosa this weekend. Moro Ojomo, three-star defensive tackle from Katy High School in Texas, is one of those recruits. Ojomo is currently scheduled to visit Oregon this weekend. Nick Saban visited Ojomo on Tuesday and extended an offer.

Brown and Jackson expect to visit A&M

Alabama commitments Bobby Brown, four-star defensive tackle from Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas, and Vernon Jackson, three-star linebacker from Boling High School in Texas, scheduled to visit College Station this weekend.

There is a chance Brown does not visit as Alabama is hoping to get him to cancel the trip. I think the odds are slim he does not make the trip. The new coaching staff has been all over him this month. He has also said he is still giving the Aggies a chance.

Jackson will take an official visit to A&M. He has also taken official visits this month to Alabama, Texas and TCU.

Alabama hopes to keep both commitments on board. It's definitely a little nerve racking for the Crimson Tide as the Aggies pose the biggest threat for both.

Surtain and Campbell to visit Miami

Patrick Surtain Jr, five-star cornerback and Tyson Campbell, five-star cornerback from American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida, will take their final official visit to Miami this weekend. Some believe the visit is just a courtesy as both prospects are set to head out-of-state. Miami, surprisingly, is probably a little more in the race with Surtain as opposed to Campbell. The Hurricanes appeared as the likely destination early on for Campbell.

I don't expect much to change after the trip to Coral Gables. Tosh Lupoi, Karl Scott and Joe Pannunzio will visit with Surtain and Campbell today. I have continued to say Alabama is in the race with Campbell a lot more than people realize. It will surprise me if Surtain does not sign with Alabama.

Walker the lone visitor to UGA

Quay Walker, Rivals100 linebacker from Crisp County High School in Cordele, Georgia, is the only official visitor scheduled for Georgia this weekend. It seemed like the Bulldogs were the favorite to steal Walker away from the Crimson Tide a month ago. It doesn't seem that way now. Tennessee and possibly Auburn are ahead of Georgia.

He's still committed to Alabama. Maybe he sticks. I don't think anyone knows what he will do. Nick Saban had an in-home visit with Walker and his family on Tuesday night. I was told the visit went extremely well, but concern about a possible flip definitely remains. It also will not surprise me if the momentum shifts back to Georgia after this weekend.

Auburn to get final stab at Langham

Malik Langham, four-star defensive end from Lee High School in Huntsville, will take his final official visit this weekend to Auburn. Langham was originally scheduled to visit Tennessee. Auburn offered Langham two weeks ago. He grew up a fan of the Tigers. Alabama DL coach Karl Dunbar had another in-home visit with Langham on Wednesday night.

It will surprise me if Langham does not sign with Alabama. The Crimson Tide offered in January, but has recruited him since last spring. He has a great relationship with the coaches. Alabama is pushing hard for the elite in-state recruit. We know anything can happen when prospects visit elsewhere the final weekend before signing day (Cyrus Kouandjio). Kids can change their mind.

Petit-Frere traveling to Columbus

Nick Petit-Frère, five-star offensive tackle from Berkeley Prep in Tampa, will visit Ohio State this weekend. Petit-Frere has taken official visits to Alabama, Florida, Michigan and Notre Dame. Petit-Frere has been very quiet regarding his recruitment, and his head coach has not given much away in terms of the direction the No. 1 OL in the country will go next week.

Petit-Frère had an in-home visit with Nick Saban, Mike Locksley and Brent Key earlier this week. The visit went great. There is a lot of back-and-forth going on with him right now. Alabama is definitely a very strong contender along with Florida. Ohio State is definitely in the race. He will likely choose between those three schools. I believe Alabama likes where it stands with him at the moment, but there is a lot that can happen in the next six days.

Copeland returning to Gainesville

Jacob Copeland, four-star wide receiver from Escambia High School in Pensacola, Florida, will have an in-home visit on Thursday with Coach Saban. Copeland took an official visit to Alabama this past weekend. The former Florida commitment will return to Gainesville this weekend for a final official visit.

Alabama has been very high on Copeland for a long time and vice versa. It's just a matter of how many receivers is Alabama willing to take especially with Jaylen Waddle and Justyn Ross supposedly favoring Alabama.

ITS set for UT visit

Isaac Taylor-Stuart, five-star cornerback from Helix High School in San Diego, will return to the Southeast for the second week in row as he is set to visit Tennessee. It seems like things are up in the air in regards to his recruitment. Will Alabama have room? The Crimson Tide continues to wait for decisions from Surtain and Campbell. Taylor-Stuart is very high on Alabama after his official visit to Tuscaloosa last weekend.

Quarterbacks still waiting to hear from Alabama

Alabama has yet to make a decision on which quarterback to 'green light'. I know there are some rumors floating around that Brevin White, four-star quarterback from Paraclete High School in Lancaster, California, has the first opportunity. I am still hearing a decision has not been made. Brock Purdy, three-star quarterback from Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona, will have an in-home visit today with Alabama assistant coach Jeff Banks. Purdy may take an official visit to Texas A&M this weekend.

Tide targets not expected to visit anywhere this weekend.

Jaylen Waddle, five-star wide receiver from Episcopal High School in Houston
(Alabama or A&M)

Justyn Ross, five-star wide receiver from Central High School in Phenix City, Alabama
(Alabama or Clemson)

Eddie Smith, three-star cornerback from Salmen High School in Slidell, Louisiana
(Alabama or Tennessee)

Olajah Griffin, five-star cornerback from Mission Viejo High School in California
(Probably USC)

Penei Sewell, Rivals100 offensive tackle from Desert Hills High School in St. George, Utah
(Alabama or Oregon)

JJ Peterson, Rivals100 linebacker from Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Georgia (Tennessee commitment)
(Tennessee or Alabama)

Brevin White, four-star quarterback from Paraclete High School in Lancaster, California
(Will he receive the green light from Alabama?)

Riddle me this, we can't seem to sign/develop top FG kicker but we routinely sign all American snappers!?!?

Since when does setting records on the distance of a snap translate into automatic FG's? :D

A lot of people look at Papp and don't take into account he was doing really well until he was hurt against Mississippi State. He struggled against FSU, then was perfect until that game. After he was hurt during that MSU game he went 50% for the rest of the season. There's a handful of kicks he missed this season that weren't on him as well.
