First of all, I'm going to copy this over to another thread in the next day or two that's centered on the class itself, etc.
Here's who I think Bama gets on NSD .... based on what I have been told.

QB - Brock Purdy or Brevin White
WR - Justyn Ross
WR - Jaylen Waddle
DT - Bobby Brown
DE - Malik Langham
LB - Jaylen Moody
LB - Vernon Jackson
CB - Patrick Surtain
CB - Eddie Smith
CB - Isaac Taylor-Stuart
OT - Nicholas Petit-Frere

A little edit here:

Currently committed:

QB - Brock Purdy or Brevin White
WR - Justyn Ross
WR - Jaylen Waddle
DT - Bobby Brown
DE - Malik Langham
LB - Jaylen Moody
LB - Vernon Jackson
CB - Patrick Surtain
CB - Eddie Smith
CB - Isaac Taylor-Stuart
OT - Nicholas Petit-Frere

That's 11 for those counting. Tell me how you're seeing that work out if we're looking at eight more spots. You're three over.

We have 14 signed from the ESD and 4 commits. It is pretty much a given that Walker and likely Jackson aren't coming. The commits are DL Brown, ILB Walker, ILB Jackson, and TE Parker. If we count Parker as a bluershirt, I can see us finishing like this with the '18 class.

DB- Surtain, ITS, and Smith- any combination of the 6 we are recruiting to go with those signed= HUGE DB HAUL
WR- Ross and Waddle- WOW!!! Add these guys with last years group+ Williams and Bolden in this class
DL- Langham and commit Brown - NICE additions to Barmore ( 6'5" 290) and Wynn ( 6'4" 308)
OL- NPF or Sewell ( thinking NPF because Sewell just seems so torn between where he wants to go)- the '19 class is LOADED with in state BIG UGLIES and we possibly clean house with all of them ( Quick, Kight, and Webb)!!! Add with Ekiyor and Tommy Brown
QB- Purdy- under the radar kid who suffered mono before his junior year and was late to the recruiting scene. NICE backup
ILB- Moody- late offer, diamond in the rough

There is a plan!

Two thoughts.

Moody takes a blueshirt?

Love those three CB's. A lot of people have considered Tyson Campbell a Georgia lock. I not saying Campbell replaces one of your projections. I am saying he's got Bama on his mind as well. Let's not forget he's been on Richt's radar for awhile as well.

Here's my thoughts this morning.

WR - Justyn Ross
WR - Jaylen Waddle
DT - Bobby Brown
DE - Malik Langham
LB - Jaylen Moody
CB - Patrick Surtain
CB - Eddie Smith
OT - Nicholas Petit-Frere

*I mentioned a few days ago the penalty involved in over-signing. I haven't learned anything differently since the day I posted it was a possibility. It'd have to be one hell of a player.

Shocked Bama only has 1 x 5* player. I know Saban says the playoffs and the bowls put Bama behind on recruiting but it looks like UGA and Ohio State are gonna be at the top above Bama no matter what. What do y'all think is the reason for this? I mean....come on.... we just the Nati and can't get no respect. Is it negative recruiting from Kirby? Is it the coaching turnover at Bama? I would think as long as Saban is there the kids would want to come and win a Nati.......thoughts??

Right now we are looking good for five more. By Rivals standard that is.

-Ross
-Surtain Jr.
-Waddle
Taylor-Stewart
-Petite-Frere

Context, especially with eight spots left. Ohio State and UGA have more verbals at this time: six and four respectively.

Now, if you want to look at this another way? There are less than a handful of teams that have a higher ranking average than Bama at this point which demonstrates just how strong this class is right now.

Hang on, compandre' ... you'll be please come the evening of the seventh.

Is Jaylen Moody really that good? I watched his highlight film and it was mehh. Looked good in coverage. Everything’s my else looked average. Hoping he is more than just a warm body.
Let me be clear here: I'm not a film expert. I do believe there are a few reasons he's ranked lower than what you'd like to see (and I'd love to know how they separate the #54 ILB from #47, but I digress.) One, grade issue. Two, he wasn't even ranked by Rivals until he started getting invitations for visits from P5 schools.

That said, I thought he looked pretty good as a defender between the tackles. Comparing the little film that's available with that of Walker and I'm not seeing the difference. He reminds me of a few players I've seen over the past few years and a few of them were ranked 5*'s.

If we land Surtain and Petit-Frere, that will give us 3 of the top 7 in the nation. Also, Walker, Taylor-Stuart, and Waddle are all in the top 39. There is very little difference between being #30 (5 star) and 31-39 (4 star). It looks like this class is still going to be very good.

Regardless of how the class turns out, if it isn't #1 you will hear other fans and talking heads trumpet the beginning of the end of the dynasty. Until coach puts another trophy on the shelf.

I'll take a stab at your question. I'll say that it was or is a combination of coaching turnover, some not necessarily the strongest at recruiting, and the fact our numbers were always going to be tighter. These kids develop relationships with these assistants more so than the HC, so playing for Saban may not be top priority. With the turnover, kids that we had been working for 18 months were now learning someone new. As adults, we always say, "you pick the school for the school and not a coach! The coach will likely leave before you do!" These kids look at it like this. What coach can I go to and talk to like a father? A father I may not actually have in my life? Who can I shoot the shit with or cut up with?
The damn minds of 17-18 year olds have been baffling adults for years!!! Caused a lot of HS coaches to lose their jobs too!
