The season's opener is for many SEC schools a cup cake, someone they expect to beat rather easily, sort of a shakedown cruise for tougher games to follow. Most of the SEC teams followed that script this week, but there are some interesting games to watch.

The first obvious game to watch is the Top 5 match up between LSU and Oregon. If they played five consecutive weeks I'd expecct LSU to win four of the five just based on their power and depth. However, they play only once, so the depth and attrition scenario dowsn't have as much of a chance to work. Oregon's speed and the turmoil at QB for LSU leads me to pick:

Oregon 24 LSU 21

Boise State and Georgia also have a high profile match up, and its important to all of the SEC as well as Georgia. If Georgia pulls off the W, an SEC champion with one loss would have an even stronger claim to being in the championship game. If Boise wins they have a great shot at running the table, and we will have to listen to all of the talking heads tell us how Boise has earned the right to be in the championship game. Georgia has a lot at stake, as Mark Richt is under pressure to win. In spite of the awful uniforms the Dawgs are wearing Saturday, they will find a way to win his one.

Georgia 30 Boise 27.

While Ole Miss and BYU is not a high profile game, mostly due to the disappointing seasons the schools had in 2010, BYU is considerably above the typical season opening opponent. Nutt may not be on the hot seat, but he can see it from where he is standing. The Rebs (or is it the Bears) will find a way at home, though just barely.

Ole Miss 24 BYU 21.

In other SEC games:

Mississippi State 27 Memphis 7

Kentucky 34 Western Kentucky 10

Tennessee 38 Montana 7

Florida 30 Florida Atlantic 10

Vandy 35 Elon 7

Arkansas 45 SE Missouri St 14

South Carolina 34 East Carolina 14

Auburn 31 Utah State 13

Alabama 45 Kent State 7

We will see next week how much egg I have on my face.

i predict a tough day for the SEC.
i think Oregon and Boise beat both of their SEC opponents on saturday with the trouncing of georgia being exceptionally horrifying. the oregon/lsu game will be a 10 point game. lsu, i believe, is in disarray and are not much of a "team".

ole miss handles BYU easily which will come as a surprise to many. they will switch to the land shark mascot at halftime due to a poor first half performance and come out swinging for the 3rd and 4th quarters putting up 31 points. immediately the "land-shark" is adopted as the permanent mascot... for now.

Florida will struggle mightily with florida atlantic. this will be one of the headlines of the day. john brantley will float at least 4 embarrassing, spit-up-your-beer interceptions and also slip several times attempting to scramble... at one point he is actually suplexed by an FAU player clearing the florida bench.

south and east carolina have a regional duel and south carolina gets away with an ugly 13 point win. spurrier pulls 6 sequential quarterbacks and ends up running the wing-T with a wide receiver taking snaps. several visors are soiled in the process. the tech staff at soco has now put the expensive headphones on a bungee lanyard which will take steve by surprise late in the 2nd quarter. after an angry grin and visor rubbing, he experiences "slap-back" from the tossed headphones as they bloody his lip upon recoil.

the other games go as they should.
