Back in February I mentioned Michigan had a proposal up for the name rights for the Head Coaching position—the ā€J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach.ā€
sk33tr , planomateo , riz , and a few others made some good points about the move. Personally, I was shocked. I didn't like it at Michigan and now that I'm seeing the BOT make the same type of move at UA? I'm not impressed.

But, it is what it is?

Paul Gattis of AL.com reports:

During meetings Friday at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved a resolution Friday that provides naming rights – either for individuals or companies -- for virtually every facility, room, office or suite in the Crimson Tide athletic department along with the price for each naming opportunity.

The list and cost of naming rights opportunities, which is 11 pages long, includes more than 300 naming opportunities. They range from $10 million on the high end (for the basketball court in Coleman Coliseum) to $20,000 on the low end for the exam room or the bod pod in the Mal Moore Athletic Facility.

For example, if you want Nick Saban to work in the office bearing your name, it costs $1 million for the naming rights to the head football coach’s suite.

For the budget-minded, though, you can have the naming rights to one of 107 football lockers at Bryant-Denny Stadium or one of 137 lockers in the Mal Moore Athletic Facility for $25,000. Or, for the same price, you can attach your name to one of 36 tutor rooms. The large tutor room, however, is $50,000.

In the Mal Moore Athletic Facility, you can purchase naming rights to one of three building lobbies ($500,000 for the main lobby, $100,000 for the north football lobby, $50,000 for the upper football lobby) as well as the rotunda ($250,000).

Lockers aren’t limited to football, either. They are available in men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, men’s and women’s track, men’s and women’s golf, softball, baseball and rowing as well as the cheerleading suite.

I'm resigned to one point in the end; Bill Battle does have an understanding of monetary issues and collegiate athletics. If he feels this is bonafide (Irony? I misspelled that at first and spell check recommended boneheaded?!?!) move, one that will bring in a substantial increase in donations...well, best of luck.

However, chalk me up in the category of, "N.O.T. A. F.A.N."

Don't like this. Everything is for sale these days...disturbing.

Along the same lines...did you see the Red River Rivalry is getting a sponsor too and replaced shootout to showdown? Just a matter of time before other big rivalry games do the same.

Well we don't want a shootout, but a showdown sound better.

I saw/read a few articles about the "shootout" being removed a year or so ago.

As to the ATT sponsorship...doesn't Jerry's World have ATT as its title sponsor...or some affiliation with them? (I've not bothered looking...just saw the articles this morning and that's what came to mind.)

Some rich guy saw the Fail Room and got jealous...Money makes dominos fall.

Re: the Red River sponsorship, does any high school kid know what the Peach Bowl is called now?

They will by the years end...

When the playoff game is in ATL they'll be using the Peach Bowl name again...Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl...but still...

bama alum I'd call it appeasement...if it does indeed end up the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl.

I understood where the folks in ATL were in their reasons for wanting to keep the CFA corp name as part of the bowl: what is it, almost 20 years they've sponsored the bowl game?

BUT, one thing I was pleased with was the commissioners of the BCS conferences wanting to keep continuity in all the games. IE: Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Fiesta, and Orange.

If recent history is any indication those five will have a corporate sponsors name before long...

tidentrue Considering the amount of money the tourism department for the state spends on TV advertisement...I wouldn't mind seeing them sponsor the Alabama vs Auburn game.
