OMG! Just noticed something in the 1956 OU season. They beat the 2-8 team that had the Heisman winner 40-0 the week before they played the ONLY team with a winning record they faced that year.

The Colorado team only played two teams with winning records that season: OU to whom they lost and Clemson (7-2-2) that season. They tied a four win Missouri team and lost to a four win Oregon team.

Looks a lot like ACC to me....how could all those teams playing each other have such shit records....amazing....still impressive to go that long and not lose...

I don't see how you think it looks a lot like the ACC. It's not even close. Just as one example, Clemson has played more teams with winning records the last two years than OU did over a five plus year span.

But, "much like UCONN's women?" We're talking about a UCONN team that beat the #2 team in the nation three years in a row along with other top five and top ten wins. Clemson's current streak can't be compared to UCONN's.

UCONN women bball....in conference is so bad...they have to go outta of conference to get competition.... credits to them...they do....

Credit....I still dont know how...all those teams n same region...same conference havent got better records just caue they play each other....as team in ACC do ( thats my basis for comparison)..... and OK didnt just schedule games looking for bad teams...or good programs having bad years.....
still impressive to go that many games without someone sneaking up onyou...
These days there isnt a year that half dozen good programs lose to a team that isnt good.....UGA...Oklahoma...so far in 19....

"...........the Notre Dame media machine had us believe that Hornung’s versatility was something unique.

Look no further than his final season in 1956. After moving to quarterback, Hornung threw three touchdowns and 13 interceptions while also leading the Fighting Irish in rushing, scoring and various kicking categories.

It all led to a 2-8 season, which was Notre Dame’s first losing season in 23 years. Yet, Hornung won the 1956 Heisman Trophy, making him the only player to ever win it with a losing record.

What a farce. Tennessee’s Johnny Majors not only out-rushed Hornung by 129 yards, but he was a more effective passer, throwing five touchdowns and three interceptions. Tennessee was also a perfect 10-0.


Then there was the great Jim Brown at Syracuse. He rushed for 980 yards (6.2 YPC) and 13 touchdowns. Syracuse was 7-2, but Brown finished just fifth in the Heisman voting.

Of course, Hornung was Notre Dame’s Golden Boy, and no African-American would win the Heisman until 1961 (Ernie Davis). The voting criterion for the Heisman has never been well defined, but in any other year besides 1956, having a winning record was a prerequisite. Safe to say we will never again see a player on a team that won 20 percent of their games winning the Heisman.
