Miles shook up his defensive staff a year ago because of an underachieving defense. It’s the reason he brought in John Chavis to run the Tigers’ defense.

But last Saturday’s debut was hardly greeted with rave reviews by LSU fans. In a lot of ways, it’s what they grew accustomed to last season when the Tigers allowed more than 30 points in their last three regular-season games. They were also torched for 50-plus in losses to Florida and Georgia.

So forgive LSU fans if they were sitting there the other night and moaning, ā€œHere we go again.ā€ - Chris Low

I think losing to Saban for the second year in a row will get them boiling worse than crawfish. The hand writing will be on the wall.

They should be 7-1 (UF) and no worse than 6-2 (UGA & UF) coming to Tuscaloosa. A good butt whipping in T'town could really cause the wheels to come off meaning losses to Ole Miss and the Hogs also. Couldn't happen to a better bunch!

Funny conversation, at least to me, this week with an LSU fan.

He was so emphatic saying how LSU had played it close to the vest this past week. How Chavis had chosen to play a cover-3, throughout about 80% of the game, and how he should be blitzing early and then running delayed blitzes.

It goes to show how little some of the Tiger fans know about Chavis. I tried telling him Chavis runs the same defense every year and has for the last 15 plus years calling defensive plays.

It was about like talking to a bookcase. There was some knowledge there...but, for some reason he couldn't open the book and look.

I hope LSU fans don't have a problem with the opposing teams converting 75% of their third downs in every game.

You shouldnt need to blitz Washington though, which is the sad thing. You run a zone scheme to take care of gimmick and misdirection plays the washington offense should have to run to move the ball effectively given the advantage of superior athletes. The front four shouldve been enough pressure.

I dont think itll matter who calls the plays, the D just seems to enjoy underachieving every year, which is why Arkansas is threatening 3 in a row.

Here's one for ya.

Four of the last five times a team from the SEC traveled to the west coast, then came home to face another team from the SEC, they lost.

So, LSU is on the west coast last weekend...traveled Monday...facing an SEC team Saturday...

Chavis has been one of the better DCs for a long time now. His philosophy has always been a "bend but don't break" style. They always ran their stuff pretty well. The only thing wrong with UT's D a year ago was a three and out offense that kept putting it back on the field. I'd say that Washington rolled up all that yardage largely because the LSU players haven't adjusted to Chavis and his schemes yet. Maybe the Miles influence is starting to show.

Maybe we are the one win. In 2000 we began the season with a 35-24 loss to UCLA that was much worse than the score indicated. We did beat Vanderbilt at legion field the following week.

so, curious, what teams are those that lost?

One was Arkansas—2005 at Southern Cal and then lost @ Bama.

Same year, LSU went to Az. State to open the season, came back and lost to UT.

I'd have to go search the schedules of each SEC team to figure the other two out...

What OOC games can you think of that SEC teams have had the last few years.

We've had UCLA like Joe mentioned...then the two I put in.
