🏀 Men's Basketball Returns to Action Sunday Night Against UCLA

  • Thread starter Thread starter Alabama Men's Basketball
  • Start date Start date
The game will be televised on ESPNU at 5 P.M. central time.

This is a big game for us both as a confidence builder and as a resume builder. As Kentucky revealed last weekend, the Bruins are mere mortals, not an elite team. A W is important.

HURT: Not a marquee matchup, but Alabama will take win over UCLA

The two teams haven't played often enough to call it a "series."

They haven't ever met outside the environs of sunny California, at least not until today. But for all its infrequency, Alabama and UCLA have played a couple of significant games in Crimson Tide basketball history, so perhaps today's game, on a cloudy day in the shadow of the football playoff and no more at stake than a possible precarious foothold on the NCAA Tournament bubble will be another small piece of history.

The first time the two programs met, there was a different kind of football shadow over the game. The Crimson Tide travelled to Pauley Pavilion in late January of 1983, a time when the Bruins' home court was the most feared venue in America, more than Rupp or Cameron, the aura of John Wooden still strong.

In those days, college basketball wasn't the constant presence on television that it is today, so the late-night CBS telecast was a rarity. But two days before the event, Alabama's legendary football coach, Paul Bryant, passed away, shaking the state.

But behind magical point guard Ennis Whatley, just inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame last week, and a little-used post player named Mark Farmer, the Crimson Tide pulled off a 74-69 win over the Bruins, a great win in what was a golden age of SEC basketball.

It's not singling out Alabama to say that those days, when the SEC was awash in NBA talent, seem distant now. Many of the league's programs (there were only 10 in those days) are looking to regain their stature from the 1980s: Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Georgia and the Mississippi schools all occupy a seat on that same boat. Where have you gone, Buck Johnson and Jeff Malone, Charles Barkley and Vern Fleming and Rudy Macklin?

Alabama was still a prominent name in college basketball more than 20 years later, when the two teams met in the 2006 NCAA Tournament in San Diego.

The Bruins had Jordan Farmar and Arron Afflalo but Alabama again had a great sophomore point guard from Birmingham, Ronald Steele, and he had the ball in the air for what would probably have been a game-winning 3-pointer - but it hit the front of the rim and fell short. Steele, who had injury problems ahead, was never the same player again. Alabama has never been so close to the Sweet 16 again.

The two teams did meet last year, but it was a game memorable only as one of a series of Alabama near-misses on the road recently and for Bill Walton's color commentary, if "tie-dye" is a color.

Fast forward to the present. Both Anthony Grant and Steve Alford are working to regain Sweet 16 stature, but neither team ranks there at the moment. UCLA is coming off a scourging at the hands of No. 1 Kentucky. No one is really as bad as Kentucky can make you look.

Despite two home wins in the interim, Alabama still seems to be bothered by a late-game loss at Wichita State. Winning this one game won't erase any of that - but it would be a small step in the right direction.

UCLA needs a road win. Alabama needs any win against a recognizable opponent and UCLA's name still carries weight. I don't remember any football opponents treating wins over Alabama as "insignificant" when the Crimson Tide was struggling.

It might not be a blip on the storied UCLA radar, and it might not be as big as some past UCLA games have been for Alabama. But for these players and coaches, it will definitely matter.

I hope we have a good crowd for the game against the Bruins. It is embarrassing to see so many empty seats in the former "Plaid Palace." Bama needs to step up and win a game against a decent opponent just before conference play starts.

Bama tried its best to lose this game. After securing a twelve-point lead at the half, UCLA owned the second half, starting out on a 10 - 0 run. In that span, Bama had an offensive foul, a brick, and an airball. Fortunately for Bama, UCLA threw it all away in the last minute...That and the coach's kid is a ball hog.

Tonight, Bama ended up with these staggering numbers:
17-51 FGs
4-22 3pt
18-30 FTs.

I am always glad to get a December win. One more non conference game to go, versus North Florida, which we should win. 10-3 non conference versus 6-7 a year ago.

Even when we were ahead (by as much as 15 in the first half) we did not look very good on offense. It was mostly Tarrant operating one on one. In the second half it was disturbing to me that we reverted to passing and dribbling the ball around on the perimeter until the shot clock got down to about 10 and then heaving up a wild shot. We've got to get our offensive fluidity back.

I am convinced that we are a much better foul shooting team than we showed tonight. Of that 18-30, Tarrant was 8-10, the rest of the group 10-20. I am glad that we are attacking the basket and getting to the foul line though.

This is the team that Kentucky led 22-0 beginning the game. Lord have mercy on our soul when we play the Kats.

At season's end this game will be like beating Appy State. UCLA is flat out horrible. Wins against a sub .500 team, even if it is the storied Bruins and yes I think they'll be below .500 at season's end, won't help much in March.

PJ, come tournament time, what can the Tide hang their hat on so far? 20 wins means nothing in this day and age. We can't beat any decent team.

Eighteen conference games, go 10-8, finish 20-9. Win one lose one in the SEC Tourney, 21-10. The only possible quality win I see on the schedule is Kentucky and that ain't possible. We'll be lucky to slow the game down and stay within 25.

Maybe go 12-6 in the SEC, and finish 21-7, win one lose one and finish 22-8, they're probably in the tourney. The record would look impressive.

That Wichita State game was so tough in so many ways. Get that win and they're in, and Wichita is way over-rated. That was a super opportunity.

Okay, through with my rant. Alabama is a football school and always will be. I'd rather win in January, truth be told.

Chief, we have some decent wins. USF, Southern Miss, Arizona State, yes, UCLA. I think that UCLA will be a decent team by March. Two of these teams we lost to a year ago. Only Iowa State and Wichita State gave us an opportunity for that marquee win, and we sure did let one slip away in Kansas. I think the committee will remember that we beat UCLA more than they will remember how bad UCLA is right now.

It is not a great year for the SEC. UK is in a class by itself, and Arkansas and LSU, maybe Georgia are next best. The schedule is not kind, in that we play UK twice and go to Arkansas, but we could get to 12 SEC wins, assuming we show some toughness. I think that gets our dance card punched.

PJ, you know better than me, but this UCLA team is horrible. Not much talent, and they play poorly to boot.

If Bama had beaten them by 15 I might agree, but the Tide didn't look all that much better most of the time. Of course it's better than losing to them. The Bruin half-court offense struggles, unless they could get it inside to their stout guy (Parker?), but like my father-in-law said last night "Why don't they try to press and run or something? They can't do anything."

Thank goodness the SEC is as weak as it is.

Alabama holds off UCLA for big win

Like so many recent Alabama basketball games, the first 39 minutes were merely prelude.

The Crimson Tide jumped to an early lead against visiting UCLA at Coleman Coliseum on Sunday, gave all of that lead away and entered the final 69 seconds dead even with the Bruins.

This time, though, it was Alabama that profited from some good defense and some opposition errors, enough to give the Crimson Tide a 56-50 win, its third straight victory and a welcome change after several high-profile games - including last year's loss at UCLA - have slipped away in the final minutes.

"We've been in that situation before," said Crimson Tide guard Levi Randolph. "Coach (Anthony Grant) preached to us before the game to just keep digging, and that's what we did."

Alabama (9-3) had a 29-17 lead at the half as UCLA struggled on the offensive end for the first 20 minutes. But the Bruins came out of the locker room and went on a 10-0 run to pull back within a basket.

Alabama managed to maintain that narrow lead for much of the half, but the Bruins pulled even when a turnover by the Crimson Tide's Michael Kessens turned into a Isaac Hamilton layup, tying the game 50-50 with 1:09 to play.

UA got one free throw from Ricky Tarrant on its next possession. UCLA then came down and got a decent look from its best 3-point shooter, Bryce Alford. The shot came off the rim, though, and after a Jimmie Taylor rebound and pass, Levi Randolph was fouled. He made both foul shots and when Alford's next 3-point attempt was an airball with 16 seconds to play, UA was able to seal the win with two more Randolph free throws.

"I thought we got a really good look on the first shot by Bryce," said UCLA coach Steve Alford. "It's no secret on our team who you are going to cover on our team but I thought he got a good look there. On the second shot (the airball), that's on me. I should have called a time out because there was nothing happening for us offensively and they did a good job defending us."

"I thought on the first possession he got a clean look that he was capable of making, even though Retin (Obasohan) made a great effort to get to him," Grant said. "On the second one, we were switching the screens and (Alford) didn't get a very good shot. So it was a combination of good defense and maybe a little luck.

"Overall, I was really pleased. It was a gritty win for us and to get a quality win when we weren't at our best offensively, you've got to give a lot of credit to our guys."

Grant also credited the crowd, estimated at 13,000-plus by UA officials, with creating an "awesome" atmosphere for the contest.

The Crimson Tide's Tarrant led all scorers with 24 points, including 18 in the first half. Randolph added 15 for UA.

Alford had 16 points to lead UCLA, now 8-5 on the season.

Alabama returns to action against North Florida at Coleman Coliseum on Friday at 6 p.m.

We didn't press because we shot the ball badly both from the field and the foul line, which limited our opportunities to press. We didn't fast break much because UCLA did do a good job of getting back on defense, and since we are far from a great rebounding team we are going to the defensive boards instead of running out. The few fast breaks we did have were off live ball turnovers and bad UCLA misses on their shots. One thing we are doing well now is defending when the opponent is dribbling in traffic, Active hands created several turnovers for us last night.

Something we haven't done and I don't know why is when our big man comes up high and sets a screen and the defense switches is have our screener roll to the basket. That play is almost as old as basketball.

I think I worded that poorly. He was speaking of UCLA and how bad they were.

I do wish Bama could run a bit more. At the beginning of the season I thought they might do a bit more running.
