🏀 🏀 Auburn vs Alabama 🏀 : No. 2/1 Alabama Falls to No. 1/2 Auburn

Just can't come out in the game and give up a 9-0 start. Alabama immediately put themselves in a hole with poor shot selection and also defensively. To me, the guys seemed really tensed. Around the seven-minute mark when Alabama made a comeback, guys were playing loose. Lot better ball movement and cuts. But then Jarin missed what should have been the easiest layup of his life and fouled. Four-point swing.

Despite that miss, I think Jarin actually showed some promise offensively. Seemed to have more confidence with the ball and dribbling to his right. If Cliff plays like that at 5 the rest of the way, we'll be a tough out.

The things I saw:
Auburn guarded us one on one and we struggled.
Sears made critical mistakes driving to the basket and throwing up bad shots or throwing a few away.
We got punched in the face early and often. We would make a comeback and then get stupid with shots or passes.
Auburn can play a half court set or up tempo, we can’t.
Our defense guarding the three off a simple high screen needs a lot of work. Somebody, anybody has to stop the ball.

We are in a critical set of games and will probably have another loss or two before the SEC Tournament. Regroup, refocus and play with some fire.

I could see 3-3 finishing out the last 6 games. I guess that would put the back 9 at 5-4. Not ideal marching into the tournament but this is a tough stretch. I hope they do much better than that.

I hope so as well but this back stretch is a killer. I can take getting beat but I cannot stand the lack of energy and basic man defense, see the ball and the person you are guarding at all times and drop off your man to help on a guy driving to the basket. Our guards are getting hammered out top by screens and the other guys don’t help but drop back. I know this is what is being taught because it happens to often.

Reid will help some when he gets back to 100% but he is not in game shape right now. Stevenson usually guards the best 2-5 players and has done an overall good job. He has to be more active on the boards. Omoruyi and Grant rebound well off the ball but struggle when they have to defend one on one. Sears has really struggled with his turnovers the past 4-5 games, getting caught inside and nowhere to go with the ball. Again, one of CNO traits of getting to the rim. Philon is finally getting his shot to fall again but sometimes tries to do too much with the ball. Holloway plays well on offense but has issues with some dumb fouls. Youngblood has had some trouble getting off his shot on the move. If his feet are set, he is deadly. Sherrill is young and has trouble competing with stronger men inside. He is going to be ok.

Bottom line, we have tp play outstanding defense, getting the ball up court and not dribble around forever. The trade off on a fast tempo is turnovers. We will be ok but we just have to weather this very difficult stretch.

Think the biggest thing this team needs is guys to find their roles. Oats eventually does want position-less basketball unless you're a traditional 5 like Cliff. Guys like Nelson, Mo, Stevenson, and Youngblood don't need be working, dribbling around and trying to create space to find a shot. Cut to the basket or find spacing. Youngblood tried multiple times as he got a high ball screen and just fired away a 3. That's not even close to what Oats wants. Swing the ball, get a paint touch, and find the most efficient shot. Allow Sears, Philon, and Holloway orchestrate the offense.

I'm not in panic mode but am PISSED at the result of a game in my opinion we should have won. If we just make layups we win this game. If we just hit 30% from three this game is tied and changes the flow of the end of the game and we are not putting 90% FT shooters on the line hoping for misses. We go through a stretch where Bromme is trying to take himself out of the game and AU two other best players have fouled out and we start jacking up three pointers instead of attacking the rim. Except for Grant who tried to dunk from half court. I think this team will realize they gripped it a little too hard and short of better decision making we could easily be talking about this team putting up triple digits in the game and winning. We somehow manage to get the lead when we had the chance our guys start going to the line instead of them, and we force them to hit pressure shots instead of FTs we could have easily won this game by 9 instead of losing by 9.

This isn't a comment at the officiating so much as it's probably deserved. Mark has been "beaten up" quite a bit this season inside the lane and outside the arc.

That said, in my view they need to have a second ball handler on the floor with Mark (or with any of the three.)

In the end there' s not a lot I take away from this last game. It's about like the game last week when they shot lights out: no one will beat the if they are shooting that well.

IF the offense is playing as poorly as they did Saturday? (And I seriously doubt we'll see that again this season.) A Sweet Sixteen could be the peak. It has to be taken into account as poorly as they played they still were in the game.

And how quickly Bama fans forget that just a few days before, on the road, Bama shot 62% from the floor and 17-29 from 3. They are unlikely to match those numbers very much either, but if they do, they dog walk anyone they play.

It's only happened one time where Bama and the barn split the regular season games with the road teams each winning. I don't think this season will be the 2nd time. Not unless we have a game where absolutely everything falls our way and the barn has a shit game like they did at home against Florida.
