As far back as the early seventies it was happening. Then QB Gary Rutledge had gotten married just before his senior year, and word got out that the newlyweds were hurting for money. The story that I heard was that every Sunday morning, in the small hours of the morning, someone shoved an envelope stuffed with cash under the door of their apartment. Probably it was happening before then.

And it didn't hurt a soul, it has always been my contention that if a rich guy wants to give a player a little extra spending cash, more power to him.
