🏈 McElwain to New Mexico St? (RUMOR)

His name has been floated around along with a couple of other for that position.

While Saban does do a good job at promoting his assistants for other positions and moving from an OC to a HC is a good move, it's my firm belief there isn't anything to worry about in this case.

My guess is the job goes to one of the other OC's that have been rumored to be ones considered...supposed to be announced sometime today IIRC.

I hate it for his family...yet another move. Doesn't he have a daughter of school age (i.e. Junior/Senior in High School). NMSU would make 4 schools in 4 years.

I would suspect that there is a notable factor working in our favor, that is that his reputation should only grow by staying, thus the job offers would still be out there.

My question is, is there some significants to NMSU other than being back out west? If "momma" McElwain is not happy (Heaven knows why a lady would not be happy in T-Town), then I can see it -- Shades of Momma Saban not diggin' South Beach.

The difference would be in he'd be a head coach vs just an OC. Prolly a little bit of money...

But, New Mexico State...not what I'd call the luke-warm bed of college football.

I caught it somewhere today that they already had their decision made, fwiw. Supposed to be announced today...but, nothing on McElwain being the guy.

if McElwain were to actually entertain the idea of taking that job it would be a career killer IMHO. Having lived in New Mexico for 7 years I can tell you that New Mexico is the Mississippi of that region, only worse. At least in Mississippi you have a quality talent pool to draw from, even if the pool is a small one. New Mexico has two schools vying for its in-state talent and about half the available recruits. And the talent level probably isn't comparable to Mississippi.

In the state's largest division (5A) there are a grand total of 22 or so schools. That alone tells you something about football at the "big time" level.

If someone like McElwain were to take that job they'd have to open pipelines to California just to have a fighting chance. Even then it would be a tough gig.

It's smaller than a lot of state's. What you have to consider (with my arguement anyway) is overall population, number of D1 schools and overall talent level.

Mississippi has a populace of what..? 2-2.5 million people.

Three division one universities vying for that in-state talent, not to mention LSU, BAMA, and Florida sneaking in on much of it as well.

That makes for a small talent pool at the end of the day.

Well I hope this bug gets squashed. You would think he would leave for a better job, mainly because his stock is only getting higher in Tuscaloosa. I believe with a couple more solid seasons, he would be a lock for a BCS conference school...at least in my mind. Might be some what of a reach, but he definitely will be getting looks.

Is that not strong enough language? :D
