🏈 McCaffrey and Fournette skipped their bowl games-Critics said it would hurt them in the draft. Top 8

Unless teams are fighting it out in the playoffs some of these high-end players will keep making the same business decision. One person made a good point about Michigan TE, Jack Butt, tearing an ACL in their bowl game. As a junior, he won the Ozzie Newsome award and the Mackey as a senior. His teammate Peppers was criticized because he didn't play in that same bowl and some thought he was just fainting an injury. Anyway, Pepper goes in the 1st round and Butt is nowhere to be found.

Butt did not measure up to OJ's intangibles, not did he have as much upside. He wasn't considered a first rounder, so I'm thinking he'll get the call soon, but to say his injury took him out of the first round doesn't fit.

It's a no brainer for first round locks to sit out non playoff games. Maybe Cam Rob should have even skipped out? Likely costed himself Millions with his penalties and poor play.

Even 2nd/3rd rounders should and will consider, depending on how much they believe 1 game could impact their draft status... Either by good play or injury.

So you are telling me that this second ACL injury did not cost him his position in the draft and a heap of money? Regardless of what round he would have been selected, Butt is paying for this like every other prospect that gets a late significant injury.

First-round prospect Jake Butt injures knee, doesn't regret playing ...

Prospect does not mean he was a first rounder. Big Cam Robinson was widely considered a Top 3 pick for the longest time, so look what happened there. Look at all of our guys, they slid like crazy for no true reason other than speculation.

I'm not saying it didn't cost him draft money, but I am saying he was not a first round guy, so using the first round as a crutch and Jabrill Peppers as another talking point doesn't mean he technically fell too far. If he got drafted tonight, he will still be fine as it's where he was supposed to be drafted. Peppers was widely considered a reach as well and receiving a grade of a C in that slot. We don't know the ending of this story because the draft isn't over, but if he goes in the Top 4 rounds, he will not have lost much, if anything. There were a number of guys drafted last night that were rehabilitating injuries and coming off surgery and it did not scare teams off.

Big Cam Robinson was once considered a Top 3 pick, so the article you're citing is old and doesn't mean anything in this conversation. He was not a first round product and once OJ came out of nowhere in last year's Championship game, Butt was no longer the top guy.

You're attempting to use the first round as a crutch to discuss a later round pick that got hurt and fell, while using Peppers as a resource that did not play in the game. It doesn't add up is all I'm saying. Sure, look at Jalen Smith last year, it's unfortunate, but these NFL guys would like to see you play in a post-season setting to see what you're made of. McCaffrey and Fournette made enough waves with their play where the extra missed game didn't hurt them, not even to mention the openness around wanting fresher bodied backs, but say a tight end or linebacker, you need that extra push since you're not necessarily highly regarded as other positions. And you're right, I think we'll see more of the bowl games skipped by these guys out of fear for their health.

How am I using the 1st round as a crutch when you quote my comments that said, "regardless of what round he would have been selected? The article I quoted is only one of many who felt his early draft status would be affected by this knee injury suffered in a bowl game. My singular point is and was, a lot of players fear what happened to Butt and it will only serve as a reminder to one and all in that position, that if there are millions waiting for you in the draft, why risk significant injury in the Sun Bowl, or wherever?

Cam Rob has been lazy and played inconsistently and sloppy over last 2 yrs.

He has a ton of talent/ability, but did not play like or look like a first round talent this year.

Most surprised to have seen Humphrey be the first defensive player off the board for UA.

Jon Allen's shoulders must be worse than reported for him to slide that far. He had the best yr of any DL this past year and has great attitude. No other reason outside of medical.

Simply because it was a major news point at the time is why the article stated that, not because it was necessarily true. I don't think it's rocket science to understand the media fabricates and pushes headlines in efforts of creating traffic It's in efforts of drumming up drama and getting the views on your work.

Butts injury was something that happens to such a small percentage of players, it shouldn't be a concern. I saw on Instagram a group of our guys boxing each other in the parking lot and one getting his ear cut and bleed. You're gonna tell me there's more of a chance getting hurt in one bowl game compared to all the dumb shit a college kid does on a daily basis? Also look no further than one of our own shooting his hand off outside of the arena of football. I'm of the idea that your school gives you scholarship money, food, a roof over your head, countless perks, clothing, medical attention, and so many other things that you owe it to them to play and honor your side of the deal. The season doesn't end Thanksgiving weekend, it goes on if you're bowl eligible.

I don't know... How much do you value hundreds of thousands of dollars? If that's not a big deal, f*ck it. lol

I'm just unsure of that mentality, because look at Jacksonville and their firat round defensive lineman from Florida a few years back. Drafted him, paid big bucks, and he tore his ACL like ten minutes into the first practice. It's all a gamble. And don't be like one of those people that think they can beat the house, because the house eventually wins.

Odds.... Get them in your favor.

If you never play, you'll never tear your ACL in that game. Another freak accident can happen but that is not in your control... Getting injured in that game is. If you're a junior/senior, made it through the grind and a few short months having a CAREER playing a GAME, risking it on a meaningless bowl game is borderline foolish. I'm a coach so I'm well aware of the emotional and meaningful reasons to finish your career for your school and teammates... However, the NCAA does not play fairly. You(likely) only get 1 chance to make the most of your career. If you don't play in that final game, you can't get injured in it. Make dat monaaaaaay

The 4th round starts today and still no Jake Butt.
