Well, this is… unorthodox.

Mark Richt
ā€˜s contract negotiations have been ongoing since at least as far back as 2004 — not really; just the end of last year — but the deal was only finalized and announced today.

Some details where already known. Richt will not be getting a pay raise despite an extension that takes him through 2016. But athletic director Greg McGarity, who also received an extension today through 2017, revealed another peculiar part of the agreement: no buyout.

Yep, Richt could walk away tomorrow and not owe UGA a dime (he currently would owe at least $2 million). Now, if he’s fired at the end of the 2012 season, Richt will be owed $4.8 million from UGA. After that, however, the amount will drop to $2.4 million.

ā€œAt the end of the day, I’ve always believed that money should not be a determining factor in people stay,ā€ McGarity said. ā€œThat should not be an anchor behind somebody’s neck. Life’s too short. … There’s no question that Mark Richt wants to be at the University of Georgia. He and I are in a good place here.ā€

Richt has been linked to other jobs before, most notably Texas A&M following Mike Shermanā€˜s termination, but I don’t see any way he leaves on his own.

there have been a few good teams since he's been there. i think the assistant coaches have been a lot of the trouble with their teams over the years, but that comes back to him. great guy, but not quite D1 SEC material.

A few good ones, yes. Thing about it, is when he's had those "good ones," you'll see a conference as a whole on a down year. In this century, two come to mind. But, the earlier stats I listed still come into play in a big way.

We've had our discussions here about Richt and the job he's done at UGA. The general consensus, as I've seen it voiced from a lot of fans, is he's done less with more throughout his tenure at UGA.

A conversation came up this weekend with a friend who is an Arkansas fan and he said he'd love to have Richt if he ended up leaving Athens. I was curious as to why, and asked. His response, "He's a winner."

So, as it ended up—as it often does with me—my curiousity was piqued and I had to look and see just how much of a winner Richt is, or isn't.

These numbers were worse than I thought.

Winning percentage in SEC play: .670

Winning percentage in SEC play against teams with 7 or more wins: .525
Winning percentage in SEC play against teams with 8 or more wins: .418
Winning percentage in SEC play against teams with 9 or more wins: .322
Winning percentage in SEC play against teams with 10 or more wins: .263

Against all opponents:

7 wins: .615
8 wins: .515
9 wins: .448
10 wins: .307

I wonder who that friend might be?

I thought his record was better than that. I think I'll pass. I trust Jeff Long though.

Anyone who knows me also know it was you. Dip-chit.

There are more reasons than just those percentages. One I didn't mention over at HST—because I know it wouldn't have gone over well no matter if it was true—has to do with recruiting.

You could take Houston Nutt and put him in Richt's position in Athens and he'd continue to have the success recruiting Richt has enjoyed.

You can not take Richt and put him in Fayetteville and see better results. The ONLY way I see a Richt staff being more successful on the recruiting trail is if he brought Rodney Garner with him and the credit wouldn't belong to MR, but to RG.

You think suspensions are on an all time high now in Fayetteville? You're having a normal Georgia off-season.
