Bonehead move on his part if it's true. IMO, he could win 7-8 games up there at Vandy and be a god there. The big jobs would come calling if they see he can win there. I guess that the boosters must be diverting their slush funds from the players now to Malzahn to keep him there.

Vandy's offer was only 1.6 mill guaranteed. He'll be well over a mill from Auburn this year. Money-wise, he isn't missing much.

It seems like he's willing to wait on the right job. I don't see him jumping at the first job just to get a head coaching job. Vandy is obviously a dead-end job; I guess he isn't looking for that kind of springboard.

Malzahn's stock will get no higher than what it is right now. I see a similarity of Malzahn/Newton as we did with Meyer/Tebow. Auburn loses a ton of experience on the O-line. That will be killer to replace and it may take several years before Gus has a stellar year again. Nonetheless, I think good things come to those who wait. Look at Muschamp. He has been talked about as being an HC since his days at AU. His patience paid big dividends, and I would imagine that Gus can do the same.

It is a safe bet that in a few years Ole Miss will come open, and who knows what else.

I agree with you for the most part. His stock is clearly at an all-time high and that is due in no small part to a man-gorilla named Newton. Auburn had less than stellar line-play in 09 and a dead-armed QB and we were still able to move the ball fairly well in most cases. Even if Cam leaves (I've resigned to the fact that he is, I just refuse to admit it usually!) if we have a QB with any sort of speed the offense should be a touch better than 09--obviously far worse than this year; I will readily admit that the stars aligned for us this year with Cam and an experienced offensive line. Some overlooked personnel losses this year which will certainly be noticed by the Auburn faithful next year--Kodi Burns and Terrell Zachary. Both are great down-field blockers. Kodi is the definition of consistency and T-Zac is a breakway threat with his size and speed. As far as the line goes--we have Brandon Mosely and and AJ Greene, AJ broke his ankle during the Clemson game and Mosely filled in for him all season. Lutzenkirchen, Dyer, McCalebb, Blake and Adams are the only consistent players we have coming back on offense. Trovon Reed figured to be special but only played two to three snaps this year because of injury. The cabinet isn't entirely bare but it is far from overstocked, either. I see your point, however. I do believe that if better mid-major program had offered Malzahn he would've taken it. It seems like I remember hearing he promised Chizik three years when he first signed, I could be wrong. I think if someone like West Virginia had offered Gus would be stupid not to take it. Regardless, he will get a better opportunity than Vanderbilt. I'm glad he's coming back next year, I just hope he didn't really hurt himself in the long run.

May be wrong, but I just don't buy into Auburn sucking on the field next year its wishful thinking but I net they don't drop like that! Not to mention they can buy a top 5 recruiting class light last year...They've been given the green light from Slive and the NCAA!

As stated earlier in this thread, his stock will never be higher than it is right now. But the Vandy job is a thankless, frustrating cluster****. My guess is that he has a head coaching gig lined up with a school that's in a bowl game. He'll accept that job after the BCSCG.

After an undefeated season, the media touts all the coaches as geniuses. That's just the way they are. He's passing on a great opportunity to be an SEC head coach. Maybe he'll regret it, maybe he won't.
We saw what a great SEC coach Meyer turned out to be once his wonder-boy QB left. Without Cam this year, AU would have been 9-3 at the very best. It'll be interesting to see Malzahn's stock at the end of next season.

I was talking to my office partner the other day and this situation with Malzahn reminds me a lot of his dad. His dad was a coach with Bama during the Debose years. After the '99 season, he told me his dad had many offers from other schools, most were HC positions at schools like La Tech. With many players coming back he decided to stay at Bama for one more year. We all know what happened during the 2000 season and his stock has never risen as high as it was in 1999.

Looking back, it was obvious what decision he should have made, but at the time Bama was riding high and he didnt know what would happen the very next season. Just thought the two instances were very similar.
