Miles is coach at LSU – for now

The LSU football coaching job was a topic of conversation at two media luncheons Monday.

Obviously, Tigers coach Les Miles discussed his current status at his press conference. Miles made an opening statement and took a couple of questions as he talked less than five minutes on the topic.

"I am going to work," said Miles at his weekly media luncheon. "I am going to rally the troops. I am going to enjoy the guys I've hired and the players I've recruited. I don't know any other way."

A few hundred miles east of Baton Rouge, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher conducted his weekly press conference. According to sources, there has been contact between representatives of LSU and representatives of Fisher to gauge his interest in the Tigers job.

Fisher did not comment on the LSU job when asked Monday. He indicated that his policy is not to address coaching jobs. Fisher acknowledged that Nick Saban "dodged these types of questions all the time. He concluded that LSU has a coach at this time.

So, Fisher certainly did not squash the rumor by saying that he intends to remain the Florida State coach.

Miles referenced another incident during his time as LSU coach when a national organization reported he was heading for a new school. ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit said before the 2007 Southeastern Conference title game between Tennessee and LSU that Miles was leaving for Michigan. That report was wrong.

"Nine years ago, a tremendously reputable sportscaster had a report that was erroneous," Miles said. "I enjoy coaching at LSU. What is the future? We'll look at that after the Texas A&M game. Right now, I am just looking at a plan and what we can exploit to get a victory."

The recent three-game losing streak has even surprised Miles. LSU was 7-0 and No. 2 in the CFP standings. Then, the Tigers dropped three straight games by at least 14 points for the first time in 49 years.

"I did not see anything but what could be a high side for this team at the start of the year," Miles said. "The offensive line could develop into one of the best in the country. The tight end was a dominant player. We had two wide receivers with great speed and ball skills.

"The quarterback was learning and developing. It's been a flat tire for a while here. LSU is an elite program. We expect to regroup and get things going fast."

Notice that Miles offered no opinion about a defense, which has allowed at least 20 points in nine straight games for the first time in school history.

With Miles' coaching job on thin ice, the game against Texas A&M has lost much luster. Moreover, there is now little conversation about former Tigers defensive coordinator John Chavis returning to Baton Rouge with the Aggies. Miles discussed facing a Chavis-coached defense.

"(Chavis) is a defensive coordinator I am very familiar with," Miles said. "He is a very talented coach. We've lined up against former coaches before and I can tell you it's never a good thing. We are looking forward to hosting (Chavis) at our stadium."

According to Miles, offensive tackle Jerald Hawkins should be available for the game against the Aggies. However, it appears that wide receiver Travin Dural will not play in Saturday's regular-season finale.

"Do your job as you would normally do it," said Miles, in reference to his approach. "I have been coaching for my job for 11 years.

Les Miles sidestepped any questions about his future as the LSU coach even though there are multiple reports that he could be fired shortly. At his Monday news conference, Miles started by saying he would be done speaking about himself "in about two minutes," then dodged queries asking about his future with the program and even referenced an errant report by ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit that he would leave LSU for Michigan to replace Llyod Carr nine years ago. "I don't want to go there," Miles said. "I would not be doing my job as the head coach at LSU, one I've enjoyed doing and a group of young men I enjoy representing.

"What is the future is to me after the Texas A&M game, great games to be played at Tiger Stadium. I'm not going to find myself watching TV or reading papers or doing anything but preparing the game plan, looking at the advantages we have and seeing if we can exploit them to victory." Miles said that national reports about his future have been wrong before and did not specifically reference any conversations he's had with LSU brass about his future with the Tigers.

Only a few weeks ago, LSU was second in the College Football Playoff rankings and running back Leonard Fournette was the Heisman Trophy frontrunner. Since then, the Tigers lost to Alabama for the fifth-straight time and then dropped games by double digits to Arkansas and Ole Miss. Yahoo Sports' Pat Forde reported Monday morning that LSU was "prepared" to part ways with Miles, whose reported buyout could be in the $15 million range. Other national outlets have similar reports. "There was a tremendously reputable national sportscaster who was the source of the information that was completely erroneous nine years ago," Miles said. "I'm going to go on to work. The question is valid, at some point in time there is a 'me' in this. Not while I'm coaching. This will always be about the players and the team." Asked if he met with any LSU administrators this week about his job, Miles said speculation about his job at this time is off limits. He said the information he has is "do your job as you would do it."

LSU has the top-rated recruiting class in the country and even without any five-star pledges the Tigers have six players with the highest four-star ranking in QB Feleipe Franks, DT Edwin Alexander, DE Glen Logan, LB Erick Fowler and DBs Eric Monroe and Saivion Smith. "We've made plans to tactically recruit our board," Miles said. "We go forward and obviously I'm the coach or something else happens and I'm not the coach."

Denham Springs, La., three-star defensive end Caleb Roddy said he plans to stick with LSU regardless of the coaching situation. "Still 100 percent LSU," Roddy said. "Unless they pull my scholarship that's where I'll be playing college ball."

Miles is 110-32 and 60-27 in SEC play during his LSU tenure but the Tigers finished 8-5 last season and had two losses apiece in the previous two years. LSU played in the BCS national championship game in 2011 but lost to Alabama. The Tigers won the BCS title in 2007 over Ohio State.

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher refused to be drawn into speculation during his Monday press conference about taking over at LSU if the position were to become open.

It's been rumored the Tigers could part ways with Les Miles, who has been with the program since 2005 and won a national title in Baton Rouge in 2007. Numerous reports have claimed Fisher, who was LSU's offensive coordinator from 2000 to 2006, is the Tigers' No. 1 choice as his replacement.

"I have no comment on that," Fisher said when asked about the LSU job. "I have a policy, I don't speak about jobs. It's unfair to the players that are there, the players that are here, the coaches that are there and here, and there is no job opening.

"So I have no comment on that. That's a policy in which I have - I'm not going to comment on any job in any way shape or form."

Fisher came to FSU in 2007 and served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach before taking over in 2010. He's coached the Seminoles to a 67-13 record and a 2013 national championship in that span. Fisher was listed in FSU's pre-press conference notes as having the second-highest winning percentage of active FBS coaches with a minimum of five seasons.

While reiterating that he would not comment on LSU speculation, Fisher did acknowledge that having his name mentioned in connection with other jobs can affect recruiting. But he said he tries to spin it into a positive.

"I think it is so unprofessional and disrespectful to even [talk about] those things," Fisher said. "But then when people, somebody asks you during recruiting, to me, I look at it as a positive. That means we're doing things right. That means people like what we're doing right here. They're encouraged by what we're doing and they think we have the right folks."

Les grew on me during his time in SEC.

Initially I hated him for his comments about Bama in 07. Then I started liking him even when he beat us and I loved watching LSU games ... part of it was my hate for teams like AUburn, Ole Miss, TAM which run the stupid offense.

So I will miss him in SEC.

Further to all teams fascination of this exotic offense which beats Bama (Ole Miss, TAM, Aubrun) and trying to acquire coach like that .. remember none of those teams have made NC game other than Auburn.

It would be sad to see another team get that awful high school offense and convert SEC to stupid Big12.

Les has many endearing qualities, chief of which are his indomitable spirit and obvious delight in his players. He's grown on me as well. I have to admit, though, it's easier to like him now that Bama owns him.

Yeah, first few years, he refused to say Alabama, instead would say "that team". Since we killed 'em in NOLA, he has started saying Alabama now. He was processed. He is an entertaining fellow. If he does get axed, I hope he just goes to ESPN and they fire either Galloway or Kanell, replaced by Les. He would make CFB Final a must see again. Then when Corso finally hangs it up, just slide Les into his spot on CGD.

The question I keep asking with alot of these hot seats or firings is who else are they going to get?

In this era of win now or be gone there is no room for coaches to have bad years and reinvent themselves. If that attitude had been back in the 60's/70's we maybe wouldn't have had a Coach Bear Bryant, Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden, and maybe even Frank Beamer. I think in some cases the firing is deserved and in others its just dumb. So who else is LSU going to get?

With $15 mil, he definitely wouldn't need to coach again (I'm sure he will). I don't think, however, he fits the...the...ideal candidate that ESPN is marketing to with Kannell, Palmer, and/or Galloway.
