🏈 Looks like the Beamer retiring rumor is true ...

29 years is an eternity at any school. Beamer turned around the Blacksburg school and made them relevant for a period of time. His last few years the Hokies have struggled and to be honest, it's past time for a change to be made. Good job Coach and best wishes.

Does Bud Foster get a shot or does the AD and school look to go outside and bring in some new blood to try and invigorate the program?

Beamer has said that he hopes someone from his staff, Foster or Beamer's son, gets the chance to replace him. If I'm VT, I open up the search. While Foster and Beamer's son have had success in the past, they're still a part of the lack of success recently. Winning is more important than loyalty.

@OldPlayer, that was really where I was headed with the question. My thinking is that after 29 years, things have gotten stale and most of your staff has been there during those stale or down years. I think someone outside the staff, like KS or LK would shoot some juice into that program.

What this doesn't tell you...

Beamer's bowl record 10-12
45-54-1 against ranked teams, 171-97-2 against unranked teams.
ACC conference titles 4 of 11 years (FSU has 4 ACC conference titles 2005, 20012-2014)

Here's where that falls apart ...

Add another rumor to the mill that Nick Saban’s Alabama coaching staff is struggling to escape.

Defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is “very interested” in the head coaching vacancy at Virginia Tech, per a report from USA Today‘s Dan Wolken.

Longtime Hokies coach Frank Beamer announced Sunday that he will retire at the conclusion of the season.

Smart, 39, joined Saban’s Miami Dolphins staff as a safeties coach in 2006, then followed Saban to Alabama to coach defensive backs in 2007.

Along with offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin and offensive line coach Mario Cristobal — who both have head coaching experience — Smart has been a popular choice when pundits try to narrow down who will fill the 10 current FBS openings.

No. 7 Alabama hosts No. 4 LSU on Saturday night (8 pm ET, CBS).

It's amazing how the writers know about his interest when the Alabama coaches aren't allowed to speak to the press.
