LOOK: Texas A&M honoring former coach Gene Stallings’ 1967 SWC title-winning team

Though Alabama won a national championship in 1992 under coach Gene Stallings, the legendary coach got his start at Texas A&M, leading the Aggies from 1965 to 1971.

In 1967, Stallings had his only winning season in College Station, but managed to lead the Aggies to the Southwestern Conference title and a Cotton Bowl victory over Bear Bryant and the Crimson Tide.

That year’s Texas A&M team will (not by coincidence) be honored on Saturday night when Alabama comes to Kyle Field. As you can see in the photo below, the 1967 team will be honored in the end zone paint:

Sadly Stallings, who also played at Texas A&M from 1954 to 1956, recently suffered a serious heart attack and likely won’t be able to make it to the game.

Saturday night’s game against No. 1 Alabama kicks off at 6:15 Central time and can be seen on ESPN.

Former Alabama coach Gene Stallings off ventilator after suffering 'massive' heart attack

Gene Stallings was on a ventilator for two days after suffering a heart attack over the weekend.

The former Alabama coach, who has suffered two strokes since May, is resting comfortably at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas after receiving a stent and being taken off the ventilator.

Former Auburn coach Pat Dye confirmed the heart attack to AL.com on Monday evening.

"The doctor thinks he's going to have a full recovery," said Dye, who confirmed Stallings had been placed on a ventilator before a stent was put in place.

"He's back to being ornery and wants to go home," Dye said.

Lynn Huggins, Dye's personal assistant who has been in contact with Stallings' wife, Ruth Ann, confirmed to AL.com that Stallings is expected to make a "full recovery."

Stallings - who developed a clot, according Huggins - was admitted to ICU at the Paris Regional Medical Center before being transferred to Baylor.

"Because he's Gene Stallings, he's not happy about being in bed," Huggins said. "For his age, the doctors feel he's going to make a full recovery."

Huggins added she talked to Ruth Ann on Monday and said, "she is very optimistic, and she sounds better."

Huggins said Stallings was canceling radio appearances this week, but will "start up next week."
