No way Les's buyout kept him from taking another job. If anything it allowed his next employer to get a discount, which should have been an incentive. Miles should have already gotten another power-5 job. He was credible at Oklahoma St. and certainly at LSU. In contrast, I think Phil Fulmer cut his own throat with all that clandestine activity at Tennessee, so I get why he was radioactive to even small schools. But Les deserves another shot.

Here he gets a lump sum and a new gig paying well.

Don't put anything past Les Miles and Jeff Long. Together, they got Miles a raise a few years ago when we all knew there was no way he was headed to Arkansas.

Consider this. If you're Jeff Long and you're "wooing" a coach to take over Kansas do you want part of his pay coming from an old employer? It's not the right look in my view.

He's a dumb dumb . They fired him, it was flat out embarrassing how he was treated.

Like I said earlier, my foot would not come off of Alleva's throat if I were in his shoes.

I'd take that extra $5M and retire at 65 (truth is, I'd do it at 45).

@TerryP I think it was you who said the monthly payments are voided if he got another gig. If that's so, the $133M a month (1.6MM a year) would not have been the first amount paid, but would've been replaced by the first $1.6MM paid. That would be below what he should get in a HC gig. If he's getting ready to take a job, he just got one more year of payments that he wouldn't otherwise receive when he signs with Kansas in a few weeks. His agent had to represent that Les is willing to sell soda for a few more years, but he'll make it all go away for 33 cents on the dollar. He then pockets a year of payments, up front, that he wouldn't otherwise have received.

That would the scenario if the payments were to stop with another HC job.

@It Takes Eleven, I have not looked up the contract to see exactly how it is worded. Hence...

Now, this is coming from three different LSU folks I've personally talked to about his contract. I've seen the same bantered about on the web.

From what I was led to believe if his buyout is X amount per year, and his new contract is the same, LSU is off the hook. So, he's getting that "extra payday," if you will, by accepting this settlement.

What we don't know is if this Kansas gig indeed comes to reality what they are guaranteeing him. While Long doesn't carry the reputation of paying coaches for years and years, Kansas does--in spades. Heck, if I'm not mistaken, Weiss received his final buyout payment from Kansas this fall.

I can say with absolute certainty that Long was in neck deep when Miles held the Arkansas job over the heads of the LSU administration. Why he wasn't called out for it I have no clue. With the friendship between Long and Miles I'm left with little to no doubt they'll both come out on top in the end.

That's what I've seen in articles, the first money comes off the buyout, and you have to be actively looking for a coaching job to keep getting paid, which leads to this secondary theory from the article above:

The other thought is that Les Miles is really taking his future in films and TV seriously as his next career move. Part of the buyout stipulated that Miles had to be “actively searching” for a new coaching job to continue to receive his buyout.

Miles’ agent has certainly earned his keep, with Miles’ name showing up on just about every job search list the last 2 years, however briefly, giving him the appearance of at least looking for new jobs. But Les has also been working in films, his podcast empire with his daughter, and multiple one-off appearances on college football media shows on ESPN and FOX networks.

If Les is heading for a permanent role on TV, such as the long rumored/fan dream of him replacing a retiring Lee Corso on College Gameday, it’s tough for him to then turn around and convince LSU that he’s still “actively looking” for a new coaching job.

Nope, but he won't be worse than the goons before him. Better question, will Long turn around Kansas? He's definitely gonna spend some money on upgrades.

Programs that have sucked that bad for that long usually have some intrinsic issues that require some fundamental institutional changes
