🏈 Les Miles favors SEC division games deciding division champs, not overall SEC records

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Count LSU coach Les Miles in Steve Spurrier's camp to choose SEC division champions based on division record instead of overall conference record. Miles said the SEC will eventually realize that LSU and Florida's annual cross-division game doesn't help either team.

"I want the schedule to be fair and I want it to give everybody the same opportunity," Miles said today in Birmingham at a luncheon for the Changed Lives Christian Center. "I'm for the Western Division deciding the Western Division champion and the Eastern Division deciding the Eastern Division champion."

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive essentially shot down that idea last month, saying it would be difficult to label some conference games more valuable than others. The idea runs contrary to how many sports decide champions, such as the NFL, NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball counting every game to determine division winners.

I'm not sure what I think about that idea. It really doesn't have any bearing on us, now, but it might in the future. I can't think of a year where we've had a loss to an eastern division opponent keep us out of ATL, can you?

I think its dumb. Im not sure why he wants this. Maybe he is scared of what's in the east. I don't know why. If anything he needs to try to move to the east. But changing that would be changing history. Its been like this for years. Don't try and change it now!

Now, what I wouldn't mind seeing would be to do away with divisions all together, and the two teams with the best SEC records meet in the SECCG. Something would have to be done to keep somebody from loading their schedule with UK, Vandy, OM, and whoever else is a weak team for it to work properly. But, I think this would make it more interesting and you would get a more true champion. Also, if this would have been in place last year, the rematch in the BCS Champ game would not have happened.

I have a certain sympathy for the idea. Tennessee had to play Alabama, LSU and Arkansas last year. Had they been respectable they would still have had to deal with three losses to superior western teams. Florida took on Alabama and LSU, South Carolina played Arkansas. Georgia played (drum roll) Ole Miss, Miss State and Auburn. Still, it is hard to know which teams in the other half will be good yea in and year out. The solution is "just win baby". While Les apparently wouldn't mind giving up his game with Florida, I am confiedent we want to keep our game with the viles, and I'm sure the Barn wants to play the dawgs every year.

What happened to Les "we'll play any sucker in the country" Miles?!?

I'll give Les this. He did vote UA #2 in his last ballot indicating he thought LSU and UA were the best two teams in the country and should meet in the BCSNC. Of course, that's a little fact lost on the majority of Tiger fans.

So I guess after being burned by his own realist ways (because voting Alabama #2 was the right thing to do, anyone that says otherwise is a homer for their own school) Les, it seems, has maybe changed his tune?? Maybe I'm seeing it wrong, but if this division record thing Miles is pushing for was in place last year then Alabama wouldn't have gotten in the Nat'l title game? Is that right?

It wouldn't have had any impact on last season at all in terms of the NC game.

It would have had an impact on the SECCG. UGA lost early on to South Carolina for their only conference loss. South Carolina dropped two conference games last year, to Auburn and Arkansas. Since both of those teams are in the Western Division, South Carolina would have won the East with one more loss than UGA, but no losses in the East.

UGA didn't have Bama, LSU, or Arkansas on their schedule last season. Basically, both Spurrier and Miles are saying UGA had an easier ride to the CG.

I don't care for the idea the more I think about how it would impact the conference standings.
