LaVar Ball pulled his son LiAngelo out of UCLA on Monday afternoon, less than a month after LiAngelo was one of three UCLA players arrested and indefinitely suspended for shoplifting in China. None of the three suspended players have appeared in a game yet, and there is no timetable for their return to the court.
The elder Ball made the decision to withdraw LiAngelo without notifying UCLA head coach Steve Alford or any of his assistant coaches.
LaMelo Ball, the youngest of the three brothers and the seventh-ranked prospect in the 2019 class by ESPN, is still committed to play at UCLA. LaVar said the plan is still for him to play for the Bruins -- but multiple sources have expressed doubt LaMelo will ever step foot on campus. There were questions regarding LaMelo's future at UCLA beginning in the summer, when he was given his own signature shoe from Big Baller Brand. Players lose their amateur status when they receive "pay in any form" for their athletic skills or when there is a promise of payment following college. If LaMelo was paid for the sneakers, he could be deemed ineligible. Those worries were compounded when LaVar pulled LaMelo out of Chino Hills High School in early October, opting to home-school his youngest son. LaVar said he was going to "make him the best basketball player ever" after pulling him out of high school.
"I can get him the best game every day," Ball told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne in October. "I just gotta go down to the hood and say, 'Who wanna ball with my son?'"

The Ball family-UCLA divorce you knew was coming

Most scouts have said that this kid wasn't even worthy of a low D1 offer. Alford made it a package deal when he signed the oldest one in an attempt to get the youngest as well. Likely hurt the draft stock of the youngest as well.

While I may applaud LaVar for raising his sons and taking care of his health stricken wife, suffered a really bad stroke I believe, he has now within the last 12-18 months gone off the deep end!!

A day after LiAngelo Ball parted ways with UCLA, LaVar Ball blamed the Bruins' coaching staff for last month's shoplifting incident during a team trip to China. LiAngelo Ball and two other UCLA players were detained on charges of stealing before their eventual release.
"There's no accountability to them?" LaVar said of the coaches during an interview on CNN's "New Day" Tuesday morning.

Without naming coaches, LaVar was critical of head coach Steve Alford and his staff for placing blame on the players — LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill — and not taking more responsibility. LaVar said the coaches should have enforced stronger rules during the trip.

"Let's stand up to bat (for the players) and say you're the coach," Ball told CNN. "Coaches are making enough money. They've gotta hold some accountability."

LaVar Ball on pulling his son off the UCLA basketball team: “That’s one of the main reasons he went to UCLA is to play basketball. That’s his passion. And for them to prolong this and go on and on, it’s ridiculous to me.”
9:06 AM - Dec 5, 2017

When the three players returned to the U.S., they were indefinitely suspended and told they would have to earn their way back on the team.

"You shouldn't hang them on the cross for this long for that," Ball said. "A kid wants to play basketball all his life. You take that away, that's worse than jail. Why should we as parents and adults keep jumping on them? It's not like we're going through life without making mistakes. ... China already forgave the boys. They returned it. Why keep them from playing sports and take their meal passes? You already sent a message. They already apologized. What's the big deal?"

"My youngest son is going to UCLA," Ball said. "This has got nothing to do with him. ... I don’t worry about nothing. It’s about me and my boys and their future. They gonna follow me even if it’s wrong."

Ball discussed his decision to pull LiAngelo out of UCLA after it became clear the indefinite suspension would take away most of the 2017-18 season. Ball said he wasn't going to let "UCLA bring my boy down. ... We're not gonna sit back and let an institution tell us what to do."

"We've got the NCAA holding him back," Ball said. "One of the main reasons he went to UCLA is to play basketball. That's his passion. And for them to prolong this and go on and on, it's ridiculous to me."

is this fuckhead serious?!!!

where's HIS accountability with his own goddman son?!! it's HIS job to raise him to do the right thing, NOT the coach of a basketball team. it's NOT the AD's job, it's NOT the school's job, it's NOT the coach's job, it's HIS job. and NO ONE else's.

he's blaming the coaches asking where's their accountability? that's like shooting someone, then blaming the victim for causing you to use an "expensive" bullet.

people like this need to be dropped off the planet somewhere around jupiter or saturn. or, more appropriately, uranus.

LOL, this is where society has gone. Parents expect teachers and other people to do all the heavy lifting for their children. It's sad.

Amen!! All the heavy lifting is to be done by us ( teaching 24 years now) but "How dare you PUNISH my child when he screws up?!!"

Pretty much any time I try to hold a student accountable or "punish" them, I get angry phone calls from their Baby Boomer or Gen X mom and pop who don't understand how I could possibly be so cruel to their perfect, precious child. People blame the kids for acting like brats, but who is raising them? Who enabled them for 18 years?
