The first two years of Strong’s contract took advantage of the fact that there were still two years left on his contract with Texas when he was fired in Austin. USF is only paying Strong a total salary of $1 million per year until his Texas buyout expires. In 2019, USF’s compensation of Strong jumps to $2.5 million. Then it’s $2.6 million in 2020 and $2.7 million in 2021. Even if Strong was winning championships here, that’s a lot of money for a Group of Five school like USF to be paying a football coach. If he’s not winning championships, it’s just plain foolish.

Always known as a guy who stays one step ahead of his competitors, Alabama coach Nick Saban has grown accustomed to coaching staff replacements every offseason. And ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum believes the six-time national champion already knows who he'll target should Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian land at Colorado during this coaching cycle.

“I think it’s possible and that’s exact ... I don’t mean to, look, it’s Monday, mid-February and I’m about to fire, I’m about to make another coaching change here, but I would call Hugh Freeze in three seconds,” Finebaum said during a radio appearance on Monday. “It’s my opinion, knowing Hugh Freeze, that he would take the job and he would be in better shape as the offensive coordinator getting shown on national television 12, 13, 14, maybe 15 times a year making calls in critical games than the kind of games that Liberty plays.

"Liberty plays two to three relevant games all year. I thought Hugh did a fantastic job there, in spite of starting the season off having his wisdom teeth pulled in the first two games in whatever chair he was in. I think that would be something that I would do.”

With the potential of Saban bringing on former USF head coach Charlie Strong this season as a defensive analyst, Finebaum said he'd pick Alabama to win the national championship in 2020 "without blinking an eye" if both Freeze and Strong were named the Crimson Tide's offensive and defensive coordinators.

Freeze told Finebaum prior to his first season at Liberty he was extremely close to returning to the SEC in some capacity as a coach and has a close relationship with Saban. He previously met with Alabama's coach in spring 2018 to fill an offensive vacancy on staff, but the potential move was blocked by SEC commissioner Greg Sankey.





We all know Coach Saban has a rehab program. I... I'm not a fan of this move. I think I'd rather see McElwain return to Tuscaloosa, though I'm pretty sure he wouldn't.

I feel like I understand why you wouldn't want Freeze, but I think he would be an excellent hire from a coaching stand point, if all this did fall into place. Lot of if's though.

We all know the cheating and scandal that took place while Freeze was at Ole Miss. Bottom line, he got it done with some very talented teams. He gave Bama hell for 2 years while we were at the top of our game. Saban saw that and knows that if Freeze were to have a roster full of talent like that, year in and year out, he would just about be unstoppable on offense.

Doesn't make sense to me, but hey, he could triple his salary and live in a 420 friendly state.

I like Boulder and in general Colorado, but the traffic around Denver is terrible.

People always complain about their traffic. Birmingham, Atlanta, Denver, Chicago, blah, blah, blah. The school isn't in Denver and he wouldn't have to go near the city.

Spend some time around Denver and get back to me. He's a coach, he's gonna spend most of his time at the University in Boulder or at an airport. The family will experience traffic.

It's a rebound job where he can show he does in fact know how to run a program. In a weak conference he can get the Buffs to 9-10 wins, a bigger program would come calling. Look at Mike Leach, Texas Tech to Washington State to Mississippi State. Same type of movement.

My point was more that he's coached at two of the more successful Pac-12 programs only to end up at one of the Pac-12s lower programs.

Some are not cut out to be HC's and I'm of the opinion Sark very well may be one of them.

Been there, done that. Boulder isn't really a suburb of Denver. There's a lot of shopping and dining before you get to Denver.

There are a lot of cities that don't belong on the bad traffic report. That doesn't mean that residents won't complain.

DC is the worst traffic I have ever dealt with and I spent a couple of months in NYC. LA had the worst road conditions of anywhere I have driven.

I have not seen any credible reports about Sark and Colorado even talking. Is this just Finebaum stirring the pot or did I miss a report?
