🏈 Lane Kiffin put a premium on elite defense at ⁦ Ole Miss ⁩, and Pete Golding has delivered

Ole Miss had one of the worst SOS in the SEC last year, so all this praise still falls deaf on me. Still not the guy I wanted on the Alabama sideline. Ole Miss was terrible on defense, so he is a welcomed sight for them and that is 100% fine. Enjoy him and hope you aren't so bent out of shape not making the Playoffs again.

And? They took care of business. 10-3 on the season I know. I think there were three teams that scored more than 21. Arkansas had the most...still got beat by 30 or more. LSU came close? 27, 28 or something like that.

Holding UGA to 10 is holding UGA to 10. Nary a coach in the nation that wouldn't love that.

Ok then. I admit I only inferred your cooperation with Terry’s original post, since you’re both staff. Sorry if I misjudged you.

In this case you did, I think. Again, I knew the post was likely to fire a few folks up, and just happened to see it the minute it was posted. Just simply based on the headline, I figured it would whip up some flames. And that's ok. IMO, the Golding thing has sorta beaten to a pulp, so it isn't really anything I care to dive back into personally, but I don't care if others do.

And? The entire "and" was in my point and the statisticstl that showed they did it against lesser opponents. They stymied Georgia, no doubt, but so did we for two quarters and so did Texas and Notre Dame.

Edit - so did Kentucky.

If the schedules were reversed between Bama and Ole Miss last season people would be very pleased with the job Wommack had done. Ecstatic!

This is all about who with a lot of folks: not what was accomplished.

I see this very similar to people complaining about a missed assignment or coverage with no recognition to the WR that broke the play...all because, he's wearing a different jersey.

I have never said he was crappy, he just did less with more. When we needed defensive support, we didn't get it. I know zero about the guy's personal life, only as a DC, and I'm glad we moved on. I've said it before "I'm ready to start seeing some new guys make some errors".

I never was a fan of PG at Bama and stated my opinion many times. I will say he has done a good job at Ole Miss. if he can replicate this year, what he did last year, I will be impressed.
As a team, Ole Miss doesn't have the roster this season. (One of those stories you see where less talent ends up with better record? I don't think so...but, ya never know.)

Simmons ... we've seen what LK and CW Jr. can do with guys like Jalen. Simmons is more of a QB with a lot of Jalen's skill set. If Kiffin's offense clicks the way I think it may they'll have the #1 scoring offense in the conference; maybe top five in the nation.

Didnt say they weren't good. But, elite? No. That word shouldn't be tossed around like that when discussing a defense.
In other words ...

In one breath we'll hear "the best defenses reside on the SEC. The SEC is the best conference in football."

But, in another breath, depending on whom and not what, it carries caveats.

@TerryP I guess it is relative to your era but how I see it probably been a decade since Bama had an elite D for what it is worth. Using that measure Ole Miss sure doesn not have an elite D. You know my general beliefs about D and we are not seeing those these days. I am certain it has to do a lot with the era, rules and offensive schemes but I haven't changed my expectations (see 2011 and probably 2016 although they screwed the pooch in the NC game and that is a shame).

We're inching closer to a conversation of me naming off all the defenses I'd consider "elite". Film breakdowns, draft picks from that defense, awards won by that defense, team stats from that year(you'll love that part), etc...

Id also would like to know how a defense would meet your criteria of having the word "elite" be associated with them? And that goes for anyone else who wants to throw their two cents in on the topic.

But, we can't.

I can't sit here and talk about the ILB play 10 years ago and compare it to last year. It's not the same football therefore no legitimate frame of reference other than the color of the jersey worn.

If there are 130+ people and you are one of the top ten? You sir, are elite. You are part of a select group that are better than the rest: the pure definition of elite.

Lot will pick stats. And ... it matters..but

I pick one thing...
towards end of game when its "nut cutting time". As an example....
Is D prepared. Are D calls having them in position to win or not lose
Ie. Like TN in 22 How do u back D up so far that 2 passes put their O in FG range
Like Michigan in cfp. Not having some one on back out of backfield on fourth n 5-6
One of Michigan bread n butter plays

Sometimes D gets beat. Ok. But .....
Other times... shitty coaching

Youd be surprised at how similar ILB 's play today, compared to ten years ago. Fundamentally at least, a lot of it is still the same. The only thing that's changed significantly is what they are asked to do more of now than what they were doing 10-20 years ago. Which is be a coverage backer, back then it was just getting downhill and get the ball carrier.

Again, fundamentally a lot of it is till the same. Read stepping, how they teach stacking and shedding off a block, eye discipline, how they fit their runs. It's honestly amazing how a lot of this stuff has remained the same throughout time. Concept wise, yes.... it's not what it was a decade or two ago. But there are remnants of what was ran at that time conceptually that coaches have implemented to modern day football.

That's what I'm sayin' ...

Perhaps this is a better example. Think back a decade ago when we'd see Bama play a team that use a lot of lighter guys on the DL that were slanting and hitting gaps to get to the QB/backfield. Those teams were signing your 240 guys and putting them on the field fifty pounds later...still with that 240 lb speed. That was their concept.

Now, that's the concept we're seeing, right? Just look at the picture of the team and you can literally see the differences. The speed and agility reports reflect the same thing.

Defensive backfield is another...good lord, they are probably playing three times the number of players Saban did (a tad bit of hyperbole, maybe.)

Yeah, almost every position group has gotten lighter on the defensive side.

That generalization is no different than the word "generational talent". So blown out of proportion. Elite is the best, not the 15 or 20 best, but THE best. An elite defense will get you into the Playoffs alone. They did play Oklahoma better than us though, I'll give them that. Of course they didn't have a fucking bonehead quarterback handing the ball to the opposing defense every three plays either.
