Alabama summer enrollee Kristian Story was rated the nationās No. 5 athlete, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. He was a record-setting quarterback for Lanett (Ala.) High School, but Story recently told AL.com that he will play safety in Tuscaloosa.
āIt was a personal choice,ā Story told AL.com. āThat is just where I see myself fitting in the most at the next level. I feel like with everything I can bring to the table that is the best chance for me to play many more years after this.ā
Story led Lanett to a state championship victory to close out his prep career after throwing 38 touchdown passes and rushing for 19 more in 2019. The 6-foot-1, 213-pound athlete was later named the Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year, and on Monday it was announced that Story was also named AL.comās Male Athlete of the Year for the 2019-2020 athletic season.
During his time at Lanett, Story set the record for career total touchdowns in the history of the Alabama High School Athletics Association with 175 total touchdowns. The No. 7 player in the state also concluded his high school tenure with 13,219 yards of total offense.
Story joined the Crimson Tide football program this summer and is playing a position that many believed he would move to at the college level. He joins a safety room that has to replace Xavier McKinney, Jared Mayden and Shyheim Carter, returns Jordan Battle, Daniel Wright, DeMarcco Hellams and Eddie Smith and added Brian Branch and Malachi Moore.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban said Story would have the opportunity to choose which position he played in his first fall at UA, and we now know that position will be at safety.
āKristian Story is a great athlete,ā Saban said in December.
