Kirk Herbstreit supports College GameDay not going to Alabama-LSU

ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit has heard Minnesota’s pitch to host ESPN’s “College GameDay” on Nov. 9, a date most people figure the popular pregame show will be at LSU-Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck made a passionate speech to sell GameDay on coming to the Golden Golphers game against Penn State on the same date, with both also being undefeated. Fleck pointed out the Minnesota has never hosted GameDay, and the Twin Cities area has 4 million people, and the only Division I school in the state is the Golden Gophers.

“All due respect to Alabama and LSU, I have no idea what’s going on with them right now,” Fleck said. “I can tell you this, you can go to them any year. Pick a year, pick a game. You can go to them every game of the season, if you would like. College GameDay is about unique stories, about unique places, about unique moments.”

Herbstreit bought the pitch Fleck sold.

“Sold me. I love it. If only I were making the decision. Love their story. Undefeated Gophers vs Undefeated Lions! Gonna be HYPED!!”

While Herbstreit has hinted on air that GameDay would be in Tuscaloosa, the official announcement typically won’t be until late Saturday night, or Sunday afternoon as it’s been the last two weeks.

I heard Rece Davis on one or our local radio shows Monday say that recently they have been seeking opportunities to go to places they have never been. Honestly, I don't see Gameday being that big of a deal to larger schools that see them almost once a year anyway. I say, go to the Gophers and have fun. I'm sure they would get a huge crowd and the show would be a hit. Hell, Gameday is going to be here in Memphis Saturday and I am not going because I've been to plenty.

Pretty lame to "pitch" for College Gameday. Minnesota should have lost to Georgia Southern, so what's Penn State going to do to them? I predict a game along the lines of Ohio State-Nebraska.

More people are about Alabama-LSU. No pro team in Alabama, best coach ever, budding LSU team, #1 vs #2. That speaks for itself, and neither coach has to plead.

Now. I don't even care where it's held, because I watch maybe 1/4 of the show anyways these days. Used to be my favorite show, now I just don't care really.

I would agree with Herbie on this one... I like it when GameDay goes to some of these smaller and less visited schools. Reality is, it makes no difference to me if they are @ the Bama/LSU game or not.

I've learned one of the reasons we didn't hear about Memphis until Sunday was due to ESPN and the city of Memphis discussing logistics of where the broadcast would be held. I haven't paid any attention to the details. Have you heard? The discussion Monday centered around a few places: campus, the stadium, and downtown (Beale St.)

It makes no difference where ESPN goes for Game Day. I saw a very few minutes last Saturday and saw they were in South Dakota, home of the Jack Rabbits. They were a power in D 2 football back in the late 80's along with N. Dakota St. Happy to see the smaller schools get some attention. Hope the crew checks out some BBQ when the are in Memphis.

Yes, the Liberty Bowl facilities are wide open but it is not very picturesque. The Beale Street option was brought up and it took them a day or so to figure out the logistics of setting everything up down there. They had to shut down a portion of it Tuesday so that was an early issue. I must admit that it went off without a hitch, I was duly impressed. Generally, we can't go more than half an hour without a shooting and damn if we went almost 10 hours Saturday.
