Of note, Smart said that Coach Saban and the Alabama staff don’t strive to lead the nation in specific categories such as third-down defense, rushing defense, or points per game. Rather, the goal is to be the best Alabama defense as it compares to the other defenses in Coach Saban’s tenure.

Smart also talked about the true motto of the Crimson Tide defense.


He said, “We've tried to become more athletic, but we'll never leave our true motto: Be bigger and more physical than everybody we play, and out-physical them at the point of attack because there is a point of attack on every play.”
