Hello Strangers.... Thought I would stop in to see if you guys were getting anything any different. Simple fact is that if Smart takes the Au job, he will do it now. They do not want him to coach in the NC game. From what I've been told, the offer is 3.2 mil with 500k incentive for a top 10 recruiting class. Like the Aubie above said....that's hard to turn down. Even still, I do not think he takes the job. I could be wrong, but I don't see anyone in their right mind wanting to start their HC career across the street from Saban. Especially Smart who knows better than anyone how good Saban is. I think Gus makes more sense for Au. He's already got ties to a lot of the recruits on their board that will be coming out, he knows how things are done down there and he has already had success as a HC (even if it is just one year at Arky St.) Add to the Saban / Mentor aspect of this thing the fact that Au is looking at some NCAA troubles on the horizon and it just doesn't make sense for Smart to gamble his career like that. I think UT's wishlist is Jimbo, then Strong. FSU has cut Jimbo's athletic budget and there is mutual unhappiness in Tallahassee. I would not be surprised to see him take the UT job. If he does, expect Smart to start practicing his war chant. If Jimbo turns it down, UT will hire Strong. This explains why Strong can't say if he will be at Louisville next season or not. He's waiting to see what happens with fisher. If UT comes at Strong, he will take it. That leaves Louisville open. I think Louisville is a great fit for Kirby to get started. They are established, not in trouble and do not expect to win it all every year. That keeps him in the south and is the perfect place to get his feet wet when one of the big time jobs is ready for him.
I will speculate big time here..... If Kirby does not leave Bama this season, then Saban's days as the HC at Bama are numbered. If Smart stays, I think Saban has given him an exit strategy time frame and hand picked Kirby as his successor. It would not surprise me to see Saban slide into Mal Moore's position. He has put his house up for sale on Lake Burton and is building a mansion in T-town, so it doesn't sound like he is going anywhere soon. That doesn't mean that he will be the coach though. I think this may be the case because Kirby has turned UGA down two years in a row (season before last and last season....which is also another reason I think he does not take the Au job). Kirby is a UGA boy and for him to turn them down flat, 2 years in a row doesn't make a lot of sense unless he's been tapped by Saban himself. Just my two cents, but I do not see him taking the Au job.
