It is a great job that I think rivals any in the country. I think they try to attract Jimbo from FSU or some other head coach.
Read today that Tennessee interviewed Strong
Oh, yes, Auburn is a fantastic job. One of the best in the country in my opinion. I just hope Smart doesn't go there, I really like him. lol
Just a couple of observations from a fan's perspective. I have no inside information or anything.
1)I would think that in the forseeable future, Smart would be in line to get the Bama job when Saban is finished his remarkable run. Why go? Stay, be in line, pick up where Saban leaves off.
2) I think there are just a few teams that can actually win a national championship. Auburn, obviously, is one of those. That in itelf makes the job attractive.
Does anyone else think a unit's production and effectiveness drops off (maybe I should add "markedly") when their particular coach leaves for a head coaching job?
I'd hate to see him leave for ANY other job.
Curious. What are you basing this statement on?
Kirby has said recently that he will only leave for a premiere HC job http://m.espn.go.com/ncf/story?storyId=8687586. I don't think Auburn is premiere level. If only talking SEC championship level then yes. However I think the UGA job would be more attractive to him not from a NC level but because its been mentioned one of his dream HC jobs as his alma mater. With Richt leaving probably in a few years I would have to think he would want to wait it out just a little longer. He is young so it's not like his clock is ticking. With NCAA looming in the background (constantly it seems and historically) with Auburn I just can't seem him going. I can understand him wanting to entertain the offer if for no other reason than gaining some exposure and HC interview experience.

You look simply because those are your aspirations. It is in the BEST conference without a doubt. IMO, I think Kirby stays or even goes as an HC where he has a chance to build his resume. Someplace like a La Tech or somewhere along those lines. You jump on that first big HC job and you may choke on it like none other than Lane Kiffin (see every HC job he has had).

All joking aside he knows too much about how they operate down there to get tangled up with that mess and also knows what the NCAA may or may not know as well. Having said that, it is time he starts putting his name out there for Head Coaching jobs so he may or may not be interviewing?
I am sure his agent would insist that he start interviewing with different schools regardless of his interest to start getting his name out there for big jobs to make him a hot name for future openings. Saban would tell him to interview as well. It is all part of the process in coaching.
These sort of rumors are all over the place at every school right now. He doesn't even fit their criteria: The search committee is going after a coach with a “proven track record” who “plays by the rules” and will “continue to build on the student-athletes success academically.”
Smart is a great defensive Coordinator, but does that necessarily give him a "proven track record' to be a Head Coach?
Trust me, Kirby Smart is going somewhere eventually and maybe even after this year, but not to Auburn, not competing directly with his mentor in the same state. He is way too smart for that.
Much ado about nothing and no need to be alarmed IMO.

I didn't say "Plays by the rules", Jay Jacobs said that. Of course Smart plays by the rules, Alabama is running the cleanest program in the nation today.
I said: They want a Head Coach with a "proven track record" Smart doesn't have that on his resume yet, at least not as a Head Coach.
They have said they want experience this time.
It really all doesn't matter, it is going to be Petrino IMO.
