🏈 Kickers?

So we'll have 3 kickers on scholarship (Foster, Shelley, & Griffith) if things stay the same... I've never heard of us EVER having that many kickers at once... Will someone get the boot?

I 'm not sure that Shelley is on scholarship. I remember reading somewhere that he walked on. Cody Mandell is also a walk on. We have a scholarship punter, Jay Williams, that as afr as I know, hasn't seen the field in his two years here.

We had t hy at icker from W. VA that moved back home a year and a half ago. Foster on scholly. Shelley isn't on scholly.

Jay was only a RS frosh this year.

ahhh okay i thought Shelley was on scholarship, well lets give Foster's scholarship to him...

Kickoffs are such a weird thing to judge. We only had five touchbacks last season. We had over 10 kickoffs returned against us for over thirty yards. But, how many scores?

I'm sure the Griffith kid is good, don't be surprised when some accuracy is lost on fgs and some distance lost on kickoffs. High schools play with wider goalposts and they kick off from the 40 whereas college kicks from the 30. Those kicks that sail into the end zone in high school will fall inside the 5-10 yd lines. If he is alot stronger in technique, he will push Foster for KO duty. He better be a good tackler though. Recall some of the words that CNS had for Tiffin a few years back?

I remember hearing the rule of thumb is that kickers lose 10 yards from high school to college. Don't really know if this makes sense or is anywhere near accurate, but I remember hearing it somewhere.

Look at my previous post and you will see where that logic lies!!

Alright, seems like you have all the bases covered. I know about the shift of kickoffs, but was more thinking of field goals. The change in width probably gets to that. Are the tees different in high school and would that play any role? Was just curious about this.

The difference in width is between college and professional. No tee incollege.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. I thought the tee had something to do with it.

If you think about it, one of the professions in the world that has the fewest successful people is probably NFL field goal kickers.

I digress...

The staff has done a lot to improve the kicking accuracy for our guys. It's just one of those positions we seem to have a problem finding consistency. Best kicking program in the nation, hands down? UGA.

I had a picture, can't find it now, of the FG's our guys were practicing on this season. They were about half of the width of regulation.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blasting Shelley or Foster. I actually think, given the circumstances, they have done a great job. Shelley seems pretty lights out up to 42 yards (don't have the actual numbers here, just my perception). I do feel bad for Foster because he only gets to attempt the 44+ yarders. If you only get to kick those, then of course the stats are going to be low and it seems like he can't really get into a rhythm either.

I will say that I can get a little annoyed when an extra point is missed though

Speaking of UGA, even Walsh had a rough year.

Yeah I dont know if I would say that about UGA at least this year, Walsh had a pretty bad year.
