Patsy and I decided to hike to a beautiful waterfall yesterday. It's located off of Quillan Creek in the Black Warrior Mountains of the Bankhead Forest. It's a remote area and was a very tiring hike but well worth it. There is no 'official trail' so it's an area that casual hikers avoid.
It's a very scenic area of the Sipsey Wilderness.
This where most people cross the creek. We were fortunate to catch it at a low water level.
Quillan creek has several small waterfalls or cascades.
And what we'd walked to see: Keyhole falls. These kind are rare in the forest.
Keyhole falls is about a 100 yards from Quillan Creek and this water flows into it.
While difficult to do as an old man, I managed to get on top of the ledge and take a poor picture of the "keyhole' from the top.
Buddy enjoys going with us. When we parked yesterday, there was another truck parked nearby so we knew someone else was more than likely on Quillan. As we hiked down the old road bed to the creek, Buddy stayed behind me. Usually, he runs 15 to 20 feet in front and then runs back, only to do the same thing again, over and over. Yesterday, he didn't do that until we met the other guy with a big lab coming out. After we passed that lab, Buddy resumed his normal hiking method. We think he knew there was a 'big dog' ahead and wasn't sure he wanted to meet him first!
