šŸˆ Key expected as Alabama's new OL coach per sources. Mario Cristobal expected to move

IMO, it's a move to specialization. Currently Alabama has separate coaches for cornerbacks and safeties and for inside LBs and outside LBs. Now Saban is doing it for G/Cs and T/TEs. These linemen combinations are where many of the combo blocks occur. Saban has brought in several linemen in the last few recruiting classes and this will be a way to isolate their development.

True, but those positions all play in space, unlike the line. Separating OTs from Cs and Gs would be like having separate coaches for DTs and DEs - just doesn't make sense. Especially when you consider that guard/tackle blocking combinations occur all the time. I think it's probably more likely to be just a nomenclature thing, but in reality they will be coached together.

Mario just wasn't getting the job done. We only just had the first 2,000 yard rusher in SEC history and a Heisman trophy winner behind that line... such a terrible job by Mario. Just horrible.

Yeah, I'll give you that, it also won a National Championship, but if the 2016 team wants to get back in the NCG where would you start then? I'm not talking personel, I'm talking schematically.

I agree with all of this. I wouldn't be surprised if Cristobal's title gets "refined" before the summer is up.

I dont think anything necessarily has to change, other than the emphasis on a dual threat QB (I have no idea if this move has anything to do with that or not) because we will have a dual threat next year whether it is Bateman, Barnett, or Hurts.

Mario never had the returning experience that Stoutland had. Every year since 13, he's had to fill in spots and deal with chemistry issues.

Cristobal is still a hell of a recruiter also.

This.

Also, I'll leave this here:

We've been primarily zone blocking every year since 08, and did a lot then, too.

This. A lot of inside and outside zone blocking, ie. stretch plays. We really haven't run much of the man on man mauling type runs since we haven't necessarily had a true FB outside of Nudie. Even then, our run game consisted of zone blocking.

Yup.

Only time we really see hat-on-a-hat blocking is in goal line/short yardage situations.
