Former Alabama radio color analyst Ken Stabler won't be back on the air this season.

Stabler, the former Crimson Tide and NFL quarterback, announced his permanent departure today, saying in a statement, "I will continue to support UA in any way possible and wish only the best to the entire Alabama family." He served 10 years on the UA radio team before stepping down last summer in the wake of a highly publicized arrest on a charge of driving under the influence. Stabler was ultimately acquitted of the charge.

Sources close to Stabler said he originally planned to return to the booth, but he eventually opted against it. UA athletics director Mal Moore said Stabler "has decided to pursue other opportunities."

"I appreciate Kenny's contributions to our program over the years and I look forward to that relationship continuing in the future," Moore said. "Kenny's an important part of our history and his involvement as part of our announce team over the years was tremendous."

Wonder if it was really his decision or if it was an amicable firing.

I know many folks probably think he got what he deserved and all, and drunk driving has touched most of our lives in one way or another, but I still can't help but feel a little bit sad about this.

I sincerely hope Snake lands on his feet. I thought he was a great color man.

Good luck to the Snake....

As much as I like Phil Savage......I do not want him in the booth on a regular basis. We have too many former football players that would do such a good job.

I'm reserving judgment on that one.

One, I haven't heard what he's like in the booth in a color role.

Two, from his resume, he understands a lot of about football.

Three, I've heard many say he's very well spoken and offers some real insight when he's been on the radio.

Have you heard him in a role like this?

Personally, I'm saddened by the whole affair, but Snake has had this problem for most of his life. I sincerely hope he gets his stuff in order. He will be/has been missed in the booth, but The University can't, and shouldn't, take a chance on him at this time. Good luck to you Kenny! :frown:
