The biggest question Iāve been getting from friends and co-workers this last week is, āHow does Alabama look?ā
Been thinking about that since the open practice on Sunday. Now, understand, watching a practice on the third day of training camp and thinking youāre getting real insight into any team is like watching rowing at the Olympics and thinking youāve got skulls down just because you pick up some terminology.
But I will say this: the Crimson Tide, top to bottom, has more athletic ability than it ever has under Nick Saban. I think I can say that because Iāve covered every game heās coached at Alabama, home and away.
Talent really is stockpiled, at nearly every position. For example, I did a story on Dee Milliner and the cornerbacks in Wednesdayās edition. Milliner started 11 games as a true freshman in 2010 with Alabama coming off a national championship.
He talked about being lost in camp. He missed several practices with a sprained ankle. And he was a starter ā not necessarily because he was ready, but because he and Dre Kirkpatrick were the two best corners. Now, of course, Milliner is a junior and the most experienced corner on the team.
