šŸˆ Kansas Professor getting flak for suggesting KU rethink football program

Read some of the replies on his timeline.

Their football program is losing roughly $20m a year and they're seeking $350M to fund new facilities/upgrades around campus, most of that going to football. Big decision ahead.

That was relatively the same idea at uab. Their attendance was (...poor) and their record usually mirrored KU's, the only difference is that occasionally uab scored major upsets, like that time they went to Red Stick and beat Saban's LSWho team. Well, you know how the last three years have been.

The bottom line is that people desperately want their football. Yung may be absolutely correct about KU being a cash-strapped university. In Kansas, unlike Alabama or any other SEC state however, not as many politicians are going to rally the cause for the necessary funding. Until someone becomes quiet the persuasive cheerleader, nothing will change there.

They can always spend a few million to bring Meyer in an attempt to save him from the Browns. :naughtydevil:

And for some...going to a football game that is not about national championships is ok....kinda like the way Football use to be.....a very long time ago...
They were made up of players from your state competing against a university with players made up from their state.....

We know students are not going to KU because they have a great football team, but the question is how many will not go there if they have no football team at all. People like to crap on sports as a money waster, but it is quite possible they would lose more money in the long run by not having one. Colleges have to foster a sense of community and camaraderie among their students and sports is one of the big ways to do so.

Well, he isn't wrong!! KU is right there with Oregon State as being one of the crappiest D1 Power 5 football schools! I know we like to give the UAB folks a hard time, but Kansas football should either go away or drop to D2, NAIA, or D3.

The professor probably gets more than the head coach at Kansas these days.

LOL, not even close...

Bigger question, are they still paying for Charlie? :rolf:

I wasn't talking about salary. I was talking about the quote that I was responding to that Bear Bryant made. More people probably see the professor give out an exam than those that got to a KU football game these days was the joke I was making.

Follow his tweets, he's engaged in the conversation. Someone brought up the details that @TerryP mentioned. I think the real issue is that KU is asking for $350M, students are paying $1,000 year extra to help cover some of the costs, and he's not clear if the numbers entail all the expenses.

Agree with him or not, this is a problem across the US. A majority of the programs are in the red and many will have no shot at being in the black.

I just looked at his tweet thread and someone already pointed that out to him. He deflected it said that he's including "hidden" costs in the Kansas budget not put in the athletics budget.
Did he go into detail on what the "hidden costs" were?

I've wondered how many would be better off if they dropped from FBS to FCS, or D1 to DII, etc. (UAB as one example.)

UNA here in Florence just made the jump to D1. Still scratching my head over that one. They share a stadium with the Florence Falcons and the high school puts more fans in the stands.
