📝 Kaho in practice rotations. UPDATE: Saban says he was granted release from WA due to academic reasons.

Saban:
There are circumstances that if a guy doesn't get admitted to a school he signed to go to, then he gets an opportunity to go some place else. He can get a release. Or he can choose to try to get eligible over time but not be able to enroll in school. I think, as I understand it, he was unable to get into school for academic reasons, because of their institutional policies, not because of NCAA rules. He could get into school at most other institutions. He had opportunities to go other places. He didn't want to sit out and try to take other classes so that he could go to the school (Washington) he had signed at. We were one that recruited him and it came down to the wire whether we got him or not. When he got a release, we let him know that he had an opportunity to come here and we are glad to have him. We think he can be a good player.
He has to go through the acclimation (period) that every other player has to go through. He was in shorts today. He will be in shorts the next time we practice. He will have to go in shoulder pads for two practices and then he can get in (full) pads. We will do the best we can to try to catch the guy up and see if he can make a contribution in some way to the team this year.

Wonder if this was a curriculum issue or GPA/SAT/ACT type issue?
English credits required for admission. From what I understand he needed an additional credit in that subject. We've seen it at Bama when a guidance counselor doesn't do their job(s.) Hell, I've seen it recently with students who weren't athletes.

It's my understanding he was taking the class and passing...and then all hell broke loose.
I was a little taken back when I found that this recruit has the highest ranking in Washington's history. That's hard to believe.
Try this one on for size. There's not a single 5 star commitment for the '19 class in the Pac 12 to date. They had four last year--all to USC.

Peterson can coach his ass off... Part of me would love to see what he could do when CNS retires... Or at any top tier job that could sign elite classes.

He doesn't strike me as a guy who wants the extra attention/pressure/drama. Washington probably the perfect fit for him

Did we have room for him on the 85 man roster or does someone have to get reduced to make room?
He counts towards initials (25) for '18...85 is not an issue.

Is there an issue meeting the 25 for '18? Will someone have to change there status for '18?
No. After signing day we were looking at the Tide being able to sign a few more because they didn't sign 25. Musika and Kaho are able to fill those remaining initial spots. There's still one back-counter left if my numbers are correct.

'19 is a different story. They'll be over the 25 number but that'll be worked out with shirting a player or two and the possibility of another back-counter.

In a sense you could say that Kaho took the slot Bama had for JJ Peterson and Musika took the one held for Bobby Brown. It's analogy, not the rule.

(FWIW, the last time I looked Peterson had reported to UT yet and they're about to hit their ninth practice.)
