🏈 Julio and McElroy

Somethings up with Julio...He had two clean drops...that I recall..the second was questionable..couldnt really tell how good the pass was...that networks coverage really leaves alot to be desired. Hes just not looking as sharp as he did last year. If he cant step up in these games...hes gonna have a helluva time stepping up in a big one. I made mention of this a few weeks ago and alot here took offense to it...but facts are just that..his play is far from where it should be. That being said...it is awesome to have the talent in the receiving corp to spread it around...very difficult if not impossible for a defense to shut that type of attack down. An unpredictable QB that will chunk it to anyone at any given time is a huge advantage. I just hope they can figure it out and overcome whatever it is...he is the best when firing on all cylinders....

I think if this was a question of Julio not playing to his potential, Mr. Saban would be addressing it. No one gets a free pass. To paraphrase Yoda: "Mike Shula, this is not".

Greg is indeed spreading the ball around, but he's a smart QB, and won't force a ball where it seems high risk. Face it JJ is covered and probably pass interfered with about every freakin' down. He's a monster, and he does make plays, sometimes without touching the ball. The guy is a hard worker and a contributor. I saw him on the sidelines getting in people's ears. He's a leader, and I have full faith that he'll make the plays when we need him the most.

I know how it is.....I sat there griping about UK scoring 20 points...we sure get spoiled easily, and I include myself!`

Sorry, but I didn't see those. What I did see though was JJ covered six ways from Sunday. Every team we go up against has seen film on him and know both his abilities and potential, so they're keeping him covered as much as possible. GMac is having to spread the ball around, and that's a good thing, because we have plenty of receivers that can take up the slack! I don't think Julio minds one bit. IMO he is less into "me" and more into the "team", which is just as he should be.
I think we'll see plenty of Julio and more than a few of his acrobatic receptions.

Julio is to the receiving corps what Mt Cody is to the defense. Both get a lot of attention from the opposition thus freeing up the rest of the team. That being said, Julio has dropped a couple of passes, most notable in the end zone against, was it VT? can't remember i've had a couple of rum and cokes.

There was an article written preseason I believe about the work that McElroy and McCoy put in. The two of them seemed to have a lot of chemistry. The article almost eluded to the fact that JPW had his go-to guy (Julio) while GMac will have his (maybe McCoy).

I don't know how a WR adjusts to a different QB, but if it were that you'd think that problem would be solved by now with all the reps and practices and such.

I'm inclined to say that we fans are making a "mountain out of a molehill", but I'd love to hear a more educated view on the dynamics of it all. Forgive me for not asking Saban personally about it on Sat.;) I have a feeling he'd say it's a bunch of crap. Then again with Saban's honesty he might say it's just something that needs to continue to come together.

Isn't that the one thing he has always stressed? For the team to get a little better in each area, in each game, and in each year? And isn't that what the team is doing?
So, Where's the Beef???
I do agree with this one statement:
I'm inclined to say that we fans are making a "mountain out of a molehill"

Julio will get his chances. Right now other teams are picking their poison by putting multiple cover guys on Julio and MacElroy finds another target. (We are not exactly use to a QB who checks down as well as he does) Proof of that is the fact that Ingram is one of the leading recievers.

Julio will eventually get his catches as defenses eventually begin to spread their coverages.

Another thing to keep in mind is we have an OC who , by his own admission approaches the play calling similar to a basketball coach. In other words, spread the ball around, see who has the hot hand, and feed them the ball. If you're not open, it's hard to get hot.

Doesn't it seem like GMAC's timing is just way off with Julio? Seems like most of the passes that I have seen thrown to Julio besides the slant routes are underthrown.

What I was saying is that it seems like GMAC is under throwing the ball to Julio when he decides to go to him.

The question wasn't whats wrong with Julio? Or is our team better or worse for Julio not get as many completions. Im not complaining about Julio not getting the ball more. Do you think Julio has gotten faster? Are the deep ball passes that are being called taking to much time to develop?

In another conversation about this, one fellow mentioned something I think is perhaps the best thought on this subject voiced.

It's not a Julio situation; it's a Greg versus John Parker situation.

Specifically, the progression in their reads. JP would make his reads, but no where near at the speed/rate that Greg does. Where JP would be looking at Julio for a second longer and see where he was going to be open, Greg looks at Julio, then moves to the other receivers, tight ends and his outlet in about the same time as JP would look at Julio, then possibly the tight end.

In simpler terms, in the time it took JP to make two reads, Greg is already moving on to his outlet read. Considering the speed the Southlake offense runs, versus the speed that the Hoover offense ran in JP's time, it really makes a lot of sense.

A lot of credit goes to our other receivers for getting open more quickly this year than last year.

A lot of credit goes to Greg for his ability to make his reads that quickly.

Some credit still has to go to the opposing defenses that are still double and triple teaming him (JJ.)

Right now, as far as I'm concerned, it really isn't a concern. If we weren't moving the ball in our passing game, and Julio wasn't getting touches, I'd see a reason to dwell on this.

But, as things are now, I'll maintain the Lt. Frank Drebin position, "there's nothing to see here."

Pretty simple. Jones is being double and triple covered just like last year. Difference is: Last year the ball would be thrown to Jones or up in the stands. This year the ball is being thrown to other receivers.

I would have never thought of it that way. Thanks Terry.<!-- / message -->

October 5 2009.

GMAC addressed the issue of everyone complaining about Julio not getting the reps.

Greg McElroy:
I wouldn't trade Julio for any one as far as his unselfishness and his determination to win.

I am very glad to hear this because, this was the number one concern for me. I am so glad he has the T.O. ability without the drama the media portrays T.O. to have.
