A preliminary hearing has been set for March 1 on third-degree robbery charges against Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey.

A Tuscaloosa County District Court judge will hear evidence that day and determine if the case goes forward.

The team’s first-round pick in 2017 was arrested in Alabama on Jan. 25 and charged with third-degree robbery in an incident involving a cell phone charger.

Humphrey was accused of stealing a $15 phone charger from an Uber driver on Jan. 13. According to the incident report, Humphrey asked to borrow a cell phone charger during an Uber ride to a Tuscaloosa, Ala., hotel.

The Uber driver alleges that Humphrey refused to return the cable and grabbed several other cables from the vehicle. Per the police report, Humphrey also elbowed the driver aside.

Humphrey’s attorney, Paul Patterson, disputed the driver’s allegations in the incident report and said, ā€œMarlon has 11 million reasons not to steal a … phone charger.ā€

Patterson has expressed confidence that the case against the former Alabama player will ultimately be dismissed.

so i'm wondering why this ever made it to court.

why not just make a deal to pay the driver the money to replace the charger (if it wasn't returned)? and then to have the thing sealed so neither party can speak of it again. the driver gets their charger back, marlon gets it over with quickly and get to go about his life, and that's all that's said about it.

Logic...In a millionaire athlete's life? :notall:

Ahhh Poor Marlon! This Uber driver is just bullying the hell out of him.
The UAPD report with the officers on the scene, under oath, say they didn't see a reason to have any charges but the Uber driver was adamant about the whole thing. But, in this case, the Uber driver is the one with the most credibility here?

When this thing goes to court someone is going to sound like the imbecile they are. In a hurry. This petty stuff seems like something Judge Judy would want to get her hands on. I would watch.

Sounds like Uber driver trying to get paid and get out of the chauffer business!

Off topic a little, but a really close friend of mine is dealing with his 16 year old son having just had his 2nd car accident in 6 months. This one, not at all his fault. He was sitting at a light waiting to make a left hand turn when he was hit head on by another vehicle. Neither person was injured and very little damage done to either vehicle. A volunteer fireman saw it and told them to move cars out of the intersection. Cop arrives and immediately writes it up as the son's fault. Long story short, my buddy received a letter from the offices of Alexander Shunnarah!!! Old boy that caused the wreck is trying to get PAID!!!!!!

if the fireman saw the actual accident happen, then the other person has no case. your son has in eye-witness and the other person doesn't, except for their word.

and you're right, the other person is just trying to get money.

Oh I know! My buddy has tried calling the Chief of Police to try and get the name of the fireman and try and get an explanation from the officer. Chief won't return his calls. The guy has already filed a claim against my friends insurance company. Insurance agent told him that they were going to pay it but "don't worry about the lawyer!" Buddy told him to do his damn job and investigate it and clear his son.
Knock on wood, my son has kept his vehicle out of the ditches and between the white lines.

I believe the police here. If it was a simple miscommunication they wouldn't have arrested him. Think about it
Lots of legal experts in this thread... But very few with common sense.

Y'all really think the Uber driver, who's very likely sober (at least not drunk), is really going to make a huge fuss and press charges if he accidentally took the charger?

And you really think the cops are going to take all this time to arrest Marlon if that was the case? Absolutely not.

Don't know the difference between theft and robbery, maybe Sportsdame is right, but common sense tells me there are 2 reasons Marlon done f'd up. And smart money says he wasn't sober... Shit happens when you party hard.

EDIT: The police report speaks for itself... Not cool, Marlon.

Ummmm....

The UAPD report with the officers on the scene, under oath, say they didn't see a reason to have any charges but the Uber driver was adamant about the whole thing. But, in this case, the Uber driver is the one with the most credibility here?

See... this is what I was talking about with the whole "jumping to conclusions before we know all the facts" thing...

My 2 cents.....Sounds like Marlon has to much to drink forgot the charger wasn't his. Took the charger..driver gives him lip...Marlon in front of 3 girls gives him lip. They aregue and takes the charger and girls.....Uber says im gonna have you arrested if you don't give me xx,xxx number of dollars since now i know who you are.... Driver tries to pinch him for money all night (15 calls). With no answer he finally calls the cops instead. Now Uber driver is pissed. When police show up Marlon gives the charger back.....Cops try to give the charger to driver who now says nope! He was the "aggressor" and I want him arrested. So stupid. I think Judge will throw out! He had his 15 dollar charger back that night. I agree wastes everyone's time and money!
